I recently picked up a 77 091 box complete with starter. I would like to put it in a 95" wheelbase Berrien rail. I will be using a 1776 motor from a 71 bus.

My question is:

Since the box is complete with bell housing and starter can I just bolt it up to the type 1 engine with no mods. Or do I need to trim the input shaft 1/2 inch to make it work? I do have a 3 rib bell housing starter and input shaft available but, would rather not go through the hassle of swapping these parts into the 091 if I don't have to.

Is there a benefit to swapping in the 3 rib stuff? Just curious.

No other than the starters are cheaper.
Just remember that if you ever need to replace the starter you have to use the SR87 that comes on a 091.
I'd use it as is.

Hey guys, I just bought a 1970 Baja for cheap, got it running, and now I'm having some trans problems.. When the car isn't running, I can put it into every gear no problem. When it is running however, I can't put it into first, only 2nd 3rd and 4th (can start it in first, and it works fine). And also, when I try to put it into reverse, it grinds like crazy and then pops in.

This is my first volkswagen, and project for that matter. So can anybody give any ideas, and help an inexperienced 18 year old out? Thanks

If you need any pictures of anything let me know too if that would help more.

Input shaft pilot bearing is done. You gotta replace it.

Will I have to pull the trans? Difficulty rating?

Thanks for the quick answer though

Pull the engine. Much easier, but overall not too hard.

Do you have any manuals?

Nixon984 Fri Feb 26, 2010 12:11 am

Alright sounds good. Need to repaint some of the parts on the engine anyways so I'll do that while the engine is out. I have how to keep your volkswagen alive and baja bugs and buggies. Is there another book I should look into getting?

busfreak_71 Fri Feb 26, 2010 12:24 am

Bentley manual is a good choice and worth the money.

Sounds good, I'll look into it. Thanks a lot for the info.

Would a 72 bus trans be better than a bug trans?

The 1st post had something about it, but didnt give a whole lot more info. Any more data on these?

A bus trans doesn't mount in the same way, but there are kits to help with this. I'd run what you have until it brakes then upgrade. I have been running a built type 1 for over 6 years with a 2110.
