what is it?? Is a real heb or did someone cut up a split to make this? It would make a cool rat.

I've never heard of a heb coupe. IMHO it looks like someone cut up a split to make it look like a late 30's big three car. I'm probably wrong but that's my opinion. I like it though. It would definatly make a cool rat.

In all of the coachbuilt books that I've read say that there was only one made but was involved in an accident beyond repair back in the 50's. Theres pictures of it in the Coachbuilt and Cabriolets book and a few in the Karosserie Hebmuller book

I dont know the history behind the modification, but it is a split that was modified to a coupe. I think I remember that it originally started of as a roofdamaged split.

Anyways it is a very well done job, all in steel.

The one and only Heb coupe built was crashed beyond repair as Steven Wood earlier said.

Here is a picture too of the original.

That looks more like the Stoll coupe....Well maybe not!

Of course this has been photoshopped with a slight lowering job.

The real Hebmuller Coupe had opening rear qtr windows. I also believe the Heb Coupe was the inspiration for the Stolle Coupe since the Hebmuller factory was already closed by 1952.

The Stoll coupe is different. Here are pics of the original one...

Who ever built this car, that's some serious metal work. I can't really tell if it has a split popes nose or if it a later one. In any case I hope it makes its way to the states so it can get a real once over...

jyrie Thu Dec 15, 2005 3:20 pm

wow...you know...i went to the car, put the key...and started it...tested that everything works, and i thought that it would be really cool to drive it in Helsinki in the winter...its a really funny car...but the hebcoupé would feel better in a warmer place. :-) you know guys...even though its a cool, i would like more the pauter big block that kris lauffer is selling...in here.
well we will see what happens to H-Cé...

Theres not as much metal wizardry in that car as you might think. First off you can tell its just a front hood being used for the rear decklid with a later oval taillight housing. Sure its some work to craft/graft in the rear enclosure, but no real custom metalshaping work going on there.

Gary Custom metalwork is surely evident to me, but maybe only because i've tried alot of it over the years. First off we don't know who did the work; don't know what type of tools he could afford, or what type of shed or garage he had, or what money to work with. Looks like he tried for the Willys coupe look, and maybe some of it was the fiberglass kit seen in VW magazine ads? Beats me, but the doors are made up with 2 front sections to surround the glass. The guy liked cars & liked to build stuff. Credit deserved in my book. Maybe it was his first attempt and wished a few things came out better looking......just like ALL of us. This negative post on this guys effort reminds me of a month or so ago, some guy from overseas showed a pic of a 49 taillight he "saved" with a delicate welding and grinding job. I work with metal too, and I thought he did a nice job. He was just proud of his work. But "somebody" jabbed his efforts by complaining that the stamped in letters/numbers were lost!!!!! BUT!, the same person is trying to sell a "set" of later split tailights that he admits have different stamping? So the stampings are so important even if they don't match? But heck, I'm off topic. If you want to study some real metal wizardry, look real close at the 55 "heb" on samba classifieds and on oldbug.com. No way that was built by some famous coachbuilding company...it was done by a craftsman here. It wouldn't have left a famous euro firm with the karmann tag. Very little filler that I can see, so he was Good! If I was to really get overly picky with that car, I would have not put the curved louvers on the deck too close to a straight line, but put them on the lid. But the rest of the flowing lines are super nice. It's too bad the car is too rusty in the custom areas. I would love to meet the builder and maybe learn some tricks. I wish more people dared to post pics of their work here too, but they may get jabbed too.

I am a fan of both this "heb coupe" and randy's convertible, if i had the time and space i would own that convertible. i realize that it is a basket case but it is also one of a kind. just like that 48 porsche......what a neat car that would be to own, but at 200K it is overpriced for the average enthusiest. however, at 10'500 ( i bet if you walked up with 9'000 it could be yours) Randy's car is a good deal, say you put another 20k into it......how sweet would it look

imagine, just imagine........................

Imagine the deal it was when it was originally for sale for $1,500.

Price only went up because of the hype it could be this only 1 remaining rare coachbuilt (which personally I never thought it was) but only ended up being a homebuilt custom back in the days. Still don't know why the price never went back down :? Too much hype still I guess??

It's an interesting looking car and I think the story is cool but damn, those rims have got to go. In a perfect world, anyone running chromies would be shot.
