I just bought a 86 vanagon gl 7 passanger and am having some problems with the tranny. Its a 4 speed standard, and the PO replaced the slave cylinder on it. im having problems shifting it it wants to grind a little when you shift when the engines under load, upshifting and down shifting. does this in all gears im wondering if this might be caused by the hydraluic clutch needing to be bleed? since the slave was just changed. This is my first vanagon and to me it seems like there may be a tranny mount broken or worn as you can feel a slight amount of movement through the shifter when you apply or let off the gas. is this normal for vanagons? also when under load i am hearing a noise from the passenger side rear that sounds alot like a cv joint on its way out. im used to front wheel drive cars where you normaly wont hear the cv noise unless your turning, this does it all the time when the vans under load turning or straight line when cv's on vanagons go bad is this about how it works?
orderd my bently just waiting for it to arive.
Thanks in advance

That sounds like what my transaxle was doing before it went out. Wish I had better news, sorry.

Mine is giving me problems shifting into first to start. I double clutch it and it is fine so I am thinking I need to bleed the slave. If you have the problems whille moving and changing gears it may be a bigger problem as you should be able to shift without the clutch if you hit your shiftpoints right. So try to double clutch it and see if it helps.

My 83 Diesel Van w/ a 5 spd recently started to get stiff shifting out of, but not in to 4th and 5th. The clutch is a bit spongy. I'm wondering if it is just a bleeding or linkage issue, or something more serious.
