OK, so the "last" hurdle for getting my buggy registered was to have a cop come out and verify the VIN. SO, the guy comes out and fills out the form and everything seems fine, until I get to the DMV. Seems the officer checked the box that says "See REMARKS" under the Federal Safety Certification Label with a note saying "NONE". The lady at the DMV tells me I now need to go to the CHP (Calif Highway Patrol) and have them reinspect it.
Thing is, when I get home to call in for an appointment, I notice the form she filled out says "(1970 and newer vehicles)" in parenthesis, and this is a 1964 pan! I wish I'd seen it while I was there, but I was too pissed off to notice. So it seems to me that since the car was built 6 or 7 years before they started using those labels, it shouldn't need one.
Does anyone out there know for sure what the rule is? I want to go back and argue the point with the manager, but any more info or ammo would help.
Thanks,
Mark |

Wow,
I went to the DMV and explained the mistake, and the guy at the front desk said "I'm so sorry, I don't even know what to say...here's a priority ticket number, they'll call you up in a couple of minutes".
Fifteen minutes later, they'd fixed the paperwork and handed me a couple of license plates!
Done deal...title to come in 20 days or so.

I used dthe VIN off the tunnel. I did a lein sale to myself, charging storage for the two months it sat unregisterable in my driveway due to lack of paperwork. It was registered as a 1964 VW Beetle at the California DMV's insistence. They said that the only time you would title it as a kit car is when the actual chassis is fabricated as well. Any time you use an existing chassis with a VIN, it's always registered as the original vehicle it was. At least, that's the story I got this time around ;-)

Yea, and I remember on the DMV website they even use a baja bug as an example of not being a kit car. Glad it worked out for you. :D |

Good ! glad to see you get that worked out, I faxed over my paperwork to the DMV, a few days ago, I haven't gotten any word back yet
it was regestered and titled as a Rail bgy, but no vin sticker or vin plate anywhere on the chassis.
my rail does not have the origial engine or transmission, just original frame. the form I was given shows they will have to inspect the engine and trans numbers, chassis number, etc.
so I re-applied for a replacement vin decal, keeping my fingers crossed and saying my prayers.
I'm thinking of going through Progressive insurance and telling them its a kit car made out of a vw beetle? even though Im putting a rotary in it |

You may want to triple check if you're allowed to run it as a bug... doesn't pass the stink test... when a cop sees it... he looks at a buggy ... not a beetle. Every state I've researched requried a state issued VIN... normally as a reconstructed vehicle... especially if it has a cut tunnel.
Glad you got your plates... now just check to ensure it's legal.
Big thing to fight for is pre smog year... most reconstructed titles are issued for the year of the inspection.
