View original topic: Water distribution "T" pipe

Well, I broke the "t" pipe, or rather, it died of old age. I ordered the part from busdepot, along with the Bentley. I have needed a good service manual for some time now anyway. Add in $45 to ship it over night, and I'm in as far as I can afford until January.
-How difficult is it to replace this piece?
-How do I fill the radiator, and the rest off the cooling system, when I'm done?
-Is there anything special about the type of coolant to use?
Any pointers or suggestions would be great.
Thanks folks

ok first thing the cooling system is a pita , then it's the bleeding the system , ok jack up the front about 6-8 inches ,remove the front grill ,becareful not to brake the screws only a half a turn , the on the pass.side is a bolt on the top soak with wd 40 , loosen bolt about 1 full turn than go to the cback .open the main tank from the engine compartment . top off with posphate free anti freeze with a mixture of distilled water top of the system run engine with a the front bleeder open untill coolant comes out ,then close the bleeder , shut engine off, jack up back end. top off system again from the res. tank at the lic plate, not the main tank.then openthe bleeder at the thermostat housing. run engine again untill coolant comes out . top off sysem again go fo a short drive up / down hills while doing all this keeping a eye on the res tank and topping off as required . see why i say pita . :D [/b]

Thanks. I get to start the job today. The great thing is, I'm at work(fire dept.)So I've got plenty of tools, and I'll be getting paid to mess with the van!! Problem is, if we get a call, I'll have to stop what ever I'm doing, and hope I remember where I was at, when I get back. Wish me luck, and please don't have any heart attacks, or fires, while I'm under the Westy.

Firebug--

Glad to hear I'm not the only firefighter who owns a VW. Seems like here in california, the first thing every new FF does is go spend 40-60K on a new lifted domestic truck. Then they have to work OT just to pay for it. Anyway, sorry to jack this thread, just nice to hear from a brother!

Stay safe! (on the job AND under the van)

The other guys here all have trucks, or motorcycles. I'm a bit of a misfit I suppose.
I got the Westy fixed! The water distribution T was in worse shape than I thought. There were actually two stems broken on it. The tilt thing worked great on filling it back up. I need to flush the system soon though.
