As long as you replace like parts with like parts you will have no problems. The difficulty comes when you mix early style and late style components.

Glenn, My 71 had the sleeve and centering ring, should I leave the centering ring off the rebuilt unit.

mrreddog Sat Jun 02, 2007 7:42 pm

my centering ring needs to come off but it looks different then the one with the spiral lock, heres a picture. should i still remove it? i did a swing axle to irs conversion and the new tranny has the sleeve.
first picture is outside the second is inside view

I'm not totally sure but you should be able to remove it. If you can't then you need to buy a new pressure plate.

mrreddog Sat Jun 02, 2007 8:43 pm

ok i removed it, this is what i have now, hows it look? the engine slid on nice now and it locks into gear but i cant pull the clutch lever by hand, how hard should it be?

mrreddog Sat Jun 02, 2007 8:49 pm

heres a shot with the pressure plate and disc bolted up..does this look correct?

mrreddog Sat Jun 02, 2007 11:00 pm

ok i went back out to the garage and checked out the clutch again, it seems its working fine, once i put a screw driver through the lever eye,it activated nicely.
this thread helped me within an hour or 2, get my motor mounted and ready to continue the build. thanks guys..
heres another picture with the engine mounted....if anyone sees any problems please let me know, this is my first sandrail build.....

ummmm, i just installed a new clutch on my 66 and it has some chatter.... i have been looking at all these pictures and relized that i put a pressure plate on that has the center ring, and i also put a throw out bearing on with a center ring.... does this matter do i have to pull the motor:(

fusername Sat Sep 22, 2007 8:15 am

i belive it will be a problem, as the extra material will make the clutch always be slightly engaged. personnaly, I wouldn't rik it. ACtually, rereading your post, chatter, iirc is from insufficiant grab and a half engaged clutch would do that. so your set up is:

tranny: has the sleeve
TOB: late style
pressure plate: has centering ring

if that is true, you ned to remove the centering ring from the pressure plate.

got it! runs great again!

Patience. Also, you might need to raise the motor up just a tiny bit more, especially if you only raised the rear of the car. If so you'll need to angle the motor down slightly to get the transmission input shaft into the disc.

Good info everyone.. Just solved a problem I had.

Regardless of throw out bearings and pressure plates, does it matter what clutch disk you get? I have a 71 super but with an older engine and the front seal is leaking so now I'm sure there's oil all up inside there as it went from normal to slipping like crazy in a matter of days. But with the older motor, not sure what I'll find when I take it off. But will a standard disk, (such as http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C26%2D141%2D002 ) fit no matter what set up you have? I've never pulled an engine before so not sure what to look for. With oil, is the disk the only thing I need to change out (other than the engine seal, of course)?

Thanks

This thread has helped me A LOT. However, is there anybody that sells just the centering ring or do I have to buy a whole new PP. (the PP is fairly new, I just put in a new trans) The car is a 65 so I ordered and installed a 65 trans. Apparently somewhere along the line somebody had installed a newer style trans that had the guidesleeve for the TO bearing, so the centering ring was not needed.

I think CB Performance sells them. But i'm sure they are "take offs" from ones they install and don't need the ring.
