| J P was the go-to dealer if you bought a VW when I was a kid, in the Oakland area. Berkey Lee was on Shattuck in Berkeley and you saw their license frames alot. Looking at the ephemera here, seeing the two different addresses for Johnson Pacific bears out my memory- they were in an earlier location at 2901 Broadway before moving the corner of Broadway and 27th. I remember going the the 2901 site with my dad in 1965 to see the "new" beetles with the bigger windows. I was almost 4, but I remember the distinctive handles on the doors to the dealership, that remained into the 80s. In the late 70s I had a several beetles and squarebacks and haunted the parts department at Johnson Pacific. The name changed in, I'd say, the late 80s. We had a Rabbit until 1986 and it was still called Johnson Pacific until that time. |

| Okay: Pleasanton was still a cowpoke town in 1969, and it was unusual to see cars from there in the greater east bay in the 70s. We had a VW from Lee Adams VW on E14th street, which was purchased in June of 1971, and there were other dealers (VW was selling 500k+ beetles and 150k+ type IIIs alone in those years, they had a lot of dealers). I wonder if the Rey Johnson was a relative, or was the same person with a second dealership? |
