ok, then it is not the drum brakes that are stopping your stopping ability, it is your tires and/or lack of weight.
folks that use the "can you lock up the brakes" as a determination that their brakes are as good as they can be, don't truly understand brake systems. If your brakes are "locked" then they are not doing their job well at all.... |

Bad syncros is not due to downshifting. Sounds like whomever this "wise man" was is the kind who has tried to tell me in the past, "Going over railroad tracks wears out the ball joints". |

ok, then what wears them out? and why is it always 2nd, the most down shifted to gear,
buginva, understand that locking up brake is not everything, obviously, but disks lock up very easily on an acvw if you get on them, so you either need better tires, or higher quality brakes.. |

believe me, *I* understand braking systems(much training and experience in my former "life")... most don't.. not sure you do 100%.... I have four wheel disc brakes on my bug and it stops on the proverbial dime... sure I can lock them up, but that's counterproductive to stopping, you are then relying on your tires, not your brakes... Even with stock sized tires, disc brakes to a better job at moving energy, which is their job.. it's what they can do for you *without* locking up that counts, and discs do it better. |

hey now, i drive a tank of a Cadillac too you know. i like to play both ends of the size scale. i think the blame should be redirected to SUVs rather than large vehicles in general. |

man, i live down here in Miami Florida, my commute is exactly 3 miles i dont even have to take the highway. Yet these jerks cant help it but to pass me even when im in the speedlimit. ussualy they pass me only to be next to me in the upcoming redlight, and when they see my car pull up they cant help it but to feel like idiots. i guess its just the stupid way people think, when they see a old car they have to feel better then us and pass us all.
but in the end we are all proud aircooled owners and inside we know theres no better car. |

| Some idiot in a nice Carerra Porsche came up behind my 67 before a stoplight and started honking. So the light turns and he goes around me and glares..I proudly gave him the bird. This is the first time someone in a Porsche or Volkswagen has done that to me in a beetle. I alway figured most of the time they would have respect for my vintage car. |

I lived in Miami almost all my life (moved there in 1966 when I was 6 years old) and know exactly what you are talking about.. I found that you can get places MUCH quicker if you are on a motorcycle.. sidewalks, parking lots, wackenhut guards chasing you through metro-rail stations.. man, that brings back some good memories :) Thankfully, I finally escaped about 8 years ago and nothing, and I mean nothing could drag me back down there.. Good luck and hope you make it out alive!! |

Oh no no no it doesn't work that way...I was flipped off by a young woman in a MKV VW Jetta as she was trying to merge onto the highway and wouldn't yield to me. I would have moved over a lane but I couldn't because cars were there. CA law states the person merging on the highway HAS TO yield to highway traffic. And I get the bird. I was like you and thought that she would have respect for the vehicle that made sales of her vehicle possible.
I guess not. |

I observe this as well. But in my truck Tuesday some made a right turn on red (allowed here, if CLEAR and STOPPED) in front of me while I was going at 50mph, I didn't know if driver was turning into innermost lane or second lane, and I didn't have room to brake safely, so I just had to swerve into the other lane to avoid collision, and in that process, pass her. That street goes another 1.5 miles one lane with 45mph limit, and I could see in my mirror that she was only going about 35mph behind me - so why did she decide (assuming there was thought process) to pull out in front of me like she did? There absolutely would have been a collision if I didn't take evasive action - I had the right of way, I shouldn't legally even need to drop my foot off the accelerator to let her in, she needed to wait until clear. But don't dare make a rolling stop, not even a hint of one, police will get you for that, or photo radar... |
