I drive from Dallas to Charlotte a lot. The fun part is passing/being passed/repassing the same cars for a 200 mile strech of road... It's almost like they become ur friends and just l00k over and smile and nod. I'll pass them, come up on a hill, they'll pass me, I'll pass them on the downhill... rinse, wash, repeat....
In DFW, I get some jerks on the highways occasionally, but most everyone waves and smiles (and turns around and slugs the pal sittin' next to them). I especially love passing sch00l busses, as it's a real blast to see a bus full of kids clobbering each other all b/c you drove by :P
the best tho, had to be the kid who leaned out of his mom's Inifiniti Q56 (BIG plush suv) and told me my primer and dented 69 was "really awesome"... those moments are the one's I remember the most, not the yuppie in his souped up mustang GT with exhaust notes worse than a rice burner... |

| i get alot of disrespect at school for my baja alot of people hate it or love it. Kinda weird i got this one kid that goes to my school that says his 350 thats has a few things done to it and its in a '82 chevy pickup truck and he says that its going to go about 165mph lol i told him he needs to get a life and then he starts dogging my baja about it topping out at 90mph lol i dont care what he says but man he gets hostile when i say something about his pickup truck. O ya i dont get cut off the road and tailgated alot but at stop lights people like to check the car and sometimes roll down the window and say cool or something like that. |

| When I bought my 72 super the guy I got it from said "Be ready to be a defensive driver, bugs get very little respect on the road." He was right. Like some of you, I get the occasional thumbs up or "How cute!" but I also have people pulling out in front of me, cutting me off, and blowing by me when they pass. I say, "their loss". Most people consider their car as just transportation, bugs have personality. Long live the classic beetle! |

Both of you guys need to learn the rules of the road. If you are going slow, do it in the RIGHT lane. No one can pass you on the right then.
I've driven many miles on SoCal's freeways in my Bug and experience none of what you describe. That's because I go with the traffic. 70mph is impeding traffic, move right. |

I've definitly gone through everything mentioned and more... Seems that if I drove a 65 mustang, everyone would give me breathing room,( must give the classic some space!), but when driving my 68 beetle - no respect at all.
All the thumbs ups and " cool car man" seem to happen for me in parking lots. Once on the road it's a whole differant story.
The thing I notice most is when I'm stopped at a light, the guy behind me is really close to my rear - I mean really close! Everyone else at the light would have like 5 to 10 feet of space between cars, but I'd be lucky to slide a deck of cards between me and the jerk behind me. They must feel pretty big, intimidating a little bug with their SUV! |

| Same problems in Canada. I used to drive a 5 ton cabover freight truck. At the end of my shift I would get into my bright orange 73 beetle. Couldn't understand the drivers. Get no respect driving a beetle , compared to a truck. Same all over it seems. |

| I enjoy driving the backroads with Ruby, but avoid the interstates and freeways for the most part. Even in my NB, I can be cruising along at 75+ and if I am in the left lane, there will invariably be some huge arse SUV come up on my tail wanting to go 85. My policy is to move over and make way for the speed demons. I sometimes get the satisfaction of passing them again a few miles down the road when they have been pulled over by the unmarked Mustang GT police cruiser. |

i usually cruise around on the weekends, not really breaking the speed limit until someone is just content on riding my rear bumper. after a while they just go around while i glance over to the driver. most cases, drivers are on the cell, oblivious to what they are passing. its like the drivers just HAVE to be seen on the cell driving. It times like those that i wish i had a loud-ass stinger to drown out their words spoke into the phone. same goes for those bassing sound systems that pull up in an intersection. Since i do not want to run a stinger, i just put some distance tween the two.
as for disrespect, there may be some. i really dont get any on account that its not my daily driver. on the weekends, i either cruise to a local hangout or go to the track. rarely do i show off on the street. (but it has happened, though) the vw gets respect then! :D |

If you can move over when faster traffic comes up behind you, you should have been there in the first place. Why do you feel the need to putter along in the left lane as if you own the road? |

Because just because someone else is being a self-important asshole dosen't mean that I have to move over, especially when I'm already speeding to keep up with traffic. If someone is passing me over 75 mph I shouldn't be be moving over, they should be slowing down. People need to slow the hell down and take their time. |

last time i had to go to traffic court a fellow told the judge pretty much what you said...he reminded said fellow he is not a police officer and was guilty of impeding traffic.... you should obey the law, not try to make it... |

Maybe Calif. has a disproportionally amount of jerks driving on the road.
What about your state? People used to say that NY drivers were bad, I disagree, Calif. has no traffic manners...every man for himself.
Sorry for the rant, but Slug-Bugs need some respect!
i live in washington, apparantly alot of people from cali have been moving up here because drivers are getting more insane here!!! then again, cali drivers blend in real well here in washington. One thing that makes spotting cali driver easy is when they get sick of sitting at a stop sign for more than a few seconds, they will back up in the lane until they can get out of there!! f**kin stupid!!! (yes I have seen this done by some stupid asshole who did it for like 100 feet while me and a few other drivers watched him like [what the f**k!!!?!?] people are getting insane). |

I get the occasional tail gaiter who will not go away, I have found that holding a shoe out the sunroof or anything big and heavy looking will get them to back off real fast.
Quote: When I had a sun roof, if they were close enough I used to flip pennies on their hood and windshield - it would scare the crap out of them
That is likely to piss somebody off very bad, but if you feel you really need to, i would reccomend lug nuts or ball bearings, they bouce off the street and end up in one of 2 places. The windshield or the radiator. All my friends that ride bikes in dallas always have a lug nut on them. There are a lot of crazy people in dallas who try to run you off the road for fun.
But then again, i would not reccomend doing that, just saying it works better, for extreme cases only |
