It's prolly worth $50K, assuming it has both the middle and rear seats back there.

(And a briefcase with $20K in cash under the rear seat).

Why did he use the same engine pic for both cars? They might both have an 1835, but at least use pics of its actual engine. Things like this make you question everything else he says about the vehicles.

I noticed his purple Double Cab that was for sale for like 10 years* isn't for sale anymore - I guess someone finally bought it?

If I remember correctly that god awful pink crew cab used to belong to a guy out of fresno ca and the wheel wells were intact. It would have been the shit in 1991 but it is lacking in today's market

$85,000 is reasonably priced??

Judging by all the pictures...

I feel like that's actually an upper end 23 window bus, being that it's wearing so many original parts. Maybe not 80k, but up there. Depends on the pictures. Granted one picture in an add is stupid.

I'd pay more for that one than that red turd of a 23 above.

It would need some super nice original parts too... and I still can't see anywhere near $80K

Of course more photos would show that... Should have sold 2 years ago if he's looking for 80K.

I keep wondering if bus prices are going to continue to rise or at some point will we get back to reasonable priced buses? also who are the people paying 200,000 for a bus are they not worried about losing thousands of dollars over paying?

Enkiel Wed May 18, 2016 12:15 pm

i'd guess that if you're willing to pay 200k for a car, you hope it gains value, but can survive if it doesnt....

Emeraldlion Wed May 18, 2016 12:16 pm

Here are my thoughts on this, taken with a grain of salt obviously. Many of these guys have been around a lot longer than I have and their opinion should weigh heavier than mine. Everything is cyclical. I have no doubt the prices will calm down and come down over the next 5-10 yrs. However, volkswagen will continue as a VERY large auto company. This, coupled with the fact that there is really NOTHING on the road that looks like a classic splittie(opinion), will always keep them in a collectible zone. I don't think they will come back down to what they have been in the past though. What I can appreciate, is that this current craze has caused the excellent restoration of MANY buses, and has preserved them for those of us that will come back and want one in 20 yrs. I am at a point in life right now where I would rather do a bug, and thus letting my bus go. I have a feeling I will come back around and want one in the distant future. Maybe I am just being hopeful. 2 pennies from a young VW enthusiast. Long live the hobby!

Anyone dropping those clams on a bus, either has a good lock on the future or has a lot of disposable income.

There are ways to capitalize on 200k busses, but you really have to be committed, or should be ;)

lets just see if the will is out there.

Over here in the Uk they have already more than levelled off...they are dropping. I suspect it'sprobably the same in the US for your average bus, but people are not willing to admit it. Also enthusiasm for projects seems to be less, so the money paid is less, and the medium-nice stuff is not selling at anywhere near the asking price. Average 15 windows are a case in point, right down to your standard late kombi.

Don't think it's just the UK, or just down to the exchange rate or Brexit confidence (that's us leaving or staying in the European Union btw).

All the folded-arms-tough-it-out-sellers (who have traditionally relied on the UK market in particular for their flips, sorry 'finds') are going to have to lower if they want to sell. Most make a big fuss about standing tall yadda yadda, but they usually budge since it's all about the money ultimately, once the 'find' euphoria has worn off.

It's the people genuinely interested in buses who will hopefully benefit. Thank god for that.

I looked back in the thread and the rear wheel wells were intact but were flared out, possibly to clear the wheels that were installed on it. Not hacked.

I think the people paying that much are not doing it for investment purposes and also have a lot of money - $200K isn't a big expense to them so if they lose some money, no big deal.

I have been told its always good to be an optimist, but this price seems a bit too optimistic.

Don't brake too hard or your seat will fly forward - no seat mounts:

Quote: I had this bus rebuilt for a new hire we had that did not work out
Isn't it illegal to CA to be missing a front bumper? Seems like a bad idea if you are using it for business purposes.

Maybe that's why the "new hire" quit?, personally if my boss built me a bus to use as part of my job I think I might be able to find a way to make it work, even if it reeked of quick flip slap it together rebuild tactics.
Or maybe the new hire couldn't drive stick?

Looks like another of one of the fakes. Later model dash and tray. Those nipples look lop sided, one pointing up and one pointing down.

It amazes me the amount of money folks throw at these buses restorations, yet.. they ignore the engine compartment. Both those engines look like crap w/ton's of wrong parts. I don't get why they don't put any kind of effort to put the engines back to bone stock, original condition..
