I downloaded wiring diagrams for a 65 and 67 bugs (mine is a 65 with 12 volts) and am still confused. Have new 2 speed switch 141-955-517 with terminals 30, 31, 31b, 53, 53a, 53b. Have good bench tested 2 speed motor 111-955-113-12V with terminals 31b, 53, 53a, 53b and a marking for 31 but no terminal. Do I connect power from fuse to switch connector 30 or 31? I've seen both, depending on where I read. Also, the wiring diagrams for a 67 show a brown wire coming from the turn signal to switch terminal 53b. I don't have such a wire. Do I just ignore? After I get power into she switch, can I assume it's a matter of connecting 53 to 53, 31b to 31b, 53a to 53a, 53b to 53b?

Whenever you see terminal 30, it will always be +12V, from the battery (fused or unfused, but always "hot" and not connected via the ignition switch) Sometimes the diagrams just show a (+) instead of stating 30, the 67 diagram on thesamba is like that. If you look at the 1968 diagram it's a bit more straightforward.

Whenever you see terminal 31, that is always a ground. Your wiper motor grounds out through the mounting to the body, which is why there's no terminal. (31 with a letter after it, like 31b, that is a ground wired via a switch.)

That wire coming off the T/S switch is actually sharing the 31 ground terminal. It has nothing to do with the wipers, it is the ground connection to for the headlight dimmer switch. You won't have that on a 65 bug. If you ever went to that kind of setup, you don't have to ground it there, it can be connected to any convenient ground point under the hood.

I didn't know about the terminal 30 rule. Here's what I'll do then:
Switch #30=power from fuse box. Switch and motor #31 will not be used because the switch or motor are grounded through the chassis. 31b to 31b. 53 to 53. 53a to 53a. 53b to 53b. Stand back and hope it works.
