| I have an '86 Jetta GL with rear drum brakes. Would like to upgrade to GTI/GLI rear disks. Can anyone advise the year range that will fit my car? Thanks, John. |

Unless it's a race vehicle, the rear disc swap is a waste of money; after having 4 rear disc-equipped A2's and one drum-equipped, IMO a parking brake that works all the time is a better thing.
I would upgrade to the 10.1"(256mm) front brakes used on the '89-92 GLI Jettas & all of the 2.0 A3 Golfs & Jettas. Get the correct knuckles/calipers/carriers & hoses to do the swap, the later('88-on) ball joints, and the 22mm master cylinder(VW part # 357.611.019.B). The previous owner of my '88 GTI did the swap, and it works well.
The only down side of the 10.1" front brakes is that you need to run at least 14" wheels; the OE 13 inchers won't work. |
