From looking at the posts here, it doesn't sound good for the 95 auto trans. When I put the car in drive....it hesitates a good while before the trans kicks in. What is this telling me? I have no experience working on the cars. It has no dipstick for the trans oil level and apparently you have to have a special tool to check the level and to add fluid. Can someone shed some light on this?
thanks,

| Jot down the 3-digit code from the tranny case, and start hunting down a used one. |

thanks for the reply. Where is the tranny number located? Also, what do those symptoms tell me besides needing a new transmission? What is crapping out?
thanks,

The transmission code is stamped into the case, and is a three-letter configuration followed by six numbers(the serial number).....I'm not 100% sure where it is, as I've never had an automatic. Look for any machined flat surface with the code stamped into it, possibly on the top of the case - standard transmissions have theirs on the bottom of the bellhousing, near the engine.
As far as what's going wrong, it's anybody's guess - the time you would spend(or pay someone else) doing a diagnosis could be outrageous, and most techs I know recommend simply replacing the whole unit. |

| sounds low on fluid to me.............does it do that when cold and work normal when it heats up(fluid expands)? |

thanks, my first thought. I once had an Impala that leaked tranny fluid and adding fluid "fixed" the problem. What is needed to add fluid to the 95 Jetta tranny? There is no dipstick for this year and requires a special tool to add fluid?

| i think on a 95 its an 01m trans.......fill from the bottom with a squeeze bottle (like an old 90weight pennzoil or other gear lube bottle with a nipple on it) filled with vw synthetic fluid. warm up the engine first, then squeeze through the hole in the bottom of the pan, after removing the 5mm allen plug about a quart( if thats the problem, thats about what it should take) make sure the trans code is 01m. its a lot more complicated than this to do it right, but it will get you close enough. fill it till fluid runs back out the hole in the bottom that yer putting it in. |
