My daughter is considering a purchase of a 2000 Passat GLS. I'm glad she's thinking of a VW of any type, but are these O.K. cars in terms of reliability? Are there any recurring problems that are would preclude her consideration?

i hated my 01 and traded it in for a new hon-duh accord. i loved the looks and the interior of the passat but it could not touch the reliability of the accord. i put 45k on the passat in a year and few months and i have put 89k on the accord in a year and 10 months so i did put miles on them both. cost to repair/maintain the passat was more than the honda overall. just my 2 cents...

check out the consumer reports buyers guide in any bookstore. they have used car ratings and you can browse through that. passats are safe big cars in my eyes. very comfortable. just not as reliable as a Honda Accord or Camry in my opinion. others may agree or disagree.

I was thinking of buying one for my wife last year. I decided against it after researching them. From what I can gather about 50% of people who bought one had no problems and absolutely loved them. The other approx. 50% had problems and either they weren't bad enough to make them get rid of the car or they completely hated the car and will never buy a VW again. The figures I quoted above are not exact figures. I guessed them from what I remember reading. I would say they are not far off though. I don't think it is limited to the Passat's though. I am pretty sure it spans the whole VW product line. I would recommend to your daughter to find another make. Just my 2 cents. I would say you have a 50/50 chance of getting a good car.
