| What ever you do, DO NOT BUY the rebuilt split wheel cylinders. I made the mistake of getting four (19mm front, 16 mm rears) and was dissapointed to say the least. You are much better off getting either NOS ATE for porsche from BBT or using new two-bolt ovals wheel cylinders. Trust me, it was a costly mistake. |

Costly as in that you just threw away money, or costly in that you had an accident?
Also, do you know what size porsche rear cylinders are? Are they 19mm? |

White Post Restoration (in Virginia) can rebuild them beautifully for around $80 each and they stand behind there work.

| depends what you are going for, if you want a totally OG car i would get correct 19mm wheel cylinders up front and 16mm wheel cylinders out back. only problem with these are that they are quite expensive. if originality isn't too much of a concern for you, go with the Porsche 356 four bolt wheel cylinders. as far as price goes, they are pretty much the same so money isn't really an issue. |

The porsche ones are more expensive than the $80 to restore. Lowest I found was $125 for one 19mm. They are however the same original Ate brand and are exactly like the orginal castings—infact better. The only thing is that you can't get the 16mm in the rear, only 19, but they will work fine on all for wheels. You'll still be able to maintain that 4 bolt look as well.
I highly recommend them as brakes are a safety issue and can give you peace of mind. You don't want to cut cost in that department. Could result in a bigger and more expensive headache later. |

| Buy the 2 bolt new 19 mm for approx $35 each and spot weld the other two holes up with 10mm bolt heads so nobody will know. The new 19's will work WAY better than any four bolts and will save you tons! |

| if you don't go original definitely go the 4 bolt way with the Porsche ones, you don't want to do any modifications to original backing plates, trust me. if you want to go the cheap route you shouldn't have bought a split. |

The real issue here is not COST, its SAFETY. I put four bolts on my split (correct 19mm fronts, 16mm rears, & 19mm master) and it took a quarter mile to stop! If someone stops short in front of you, then where is your priceless split then??
Do yourself a favor, learn from others mistakes. I spent way too much cash trying to put it back together OG. I was soooooo dissapointed when I took it for a spin. I did not even want to go onto a major road.
I should also add that I completely re-did the whole breaking system on the car (drum pads, lines, springs, etc.) |

Also, most of the bleeder screw holes and bolt holes were stripped out on the rebuilts and completely un-usable
BUY NEW!! |

i have NO PROBLEMS with my OG master cylinder and wheel cylinders. and the stopping distance was nowhere near that bad. i think there were others issues involved if it took that long to stop. german engineers weren't stupid. are drum brakes the best? of course not, but if you want the best stopping power go with disc brakes, they will blow any of the aforementioned options out of the water.
if safety is that much of a concern (which if it's a daily driver it should be), get disk brakes or for the OG look at least get the four bolt Porsche wheel cylinders like i previously stated. |
