What size valves come standard on the VW 043 head?

Glenn Mon Feb 06, 2006 3:54 am

I think 40x35 is the "standard" valve size for them.

The 043 was a F.I head and I think the valve's where 34 x 32 which were even smaler then a carb engine. But now in day you may find 043 casting with all type's of valve size's check these 043 head out.

33 X 30, 35 X 32, 40 X 35, and 42 X 37.5 have all been used in that head. There is no "stock" size, you must measure them.

Hi folks, I've bare 043 heads with no seats, just the seat bores, and I'm having a hard time trying to source a 30mm valve seat and a 30mm valve. But it just occurred to me that I've no idea if that's definitely what I need, or maybe it's possible for me to ram a 32mm in there, cos it depends on the OD, ID and the valve seating surface I'd assume. So how the fu*k does one work that out? Like if it was a 30mm exhaust valve, what would the OD, ID of the seat need to be? And what'd the valve sealing surface be? 1mm or wha? And I know everyone will say, send it to a machine shop, and maybe I will, but what magical knowledge do they have to help them choose? Anyone able to guide me?

Sure. The seat OD should be about 1mm larger than the valve, there is some wiggle room to go either way.

In a OE VW head the seats are peened over making them appear smaller from the outside.

you can fit the seats to the head, or fit the head to the seats, but of course this requires a VGS machine and a lathe, which I'm guessing you don't have.

Also, most valves can be made smaller. Can't make em bigger tho

Thanks Modok. I don't have a lathe or VGS machine. Thanks for the info and tips, they may give me some latitude of approach once I measure up the bores again...

The first thing they do is measure them, which you seem to be averse to.

A hasty conclusion and a smartass answer, John. I did measure them some time back, that's why I said I was trying to find a 30mm valve. Put some lotion on it.
