Hi all, I have this friend that owns a 2000-2002 Passat I forget the exact year but anyway, he replaced the battery and soon after the car would not start. Now it did start and ran fine before replacing the battery. He took in to a VW dealer and they said that they have to reset the computer which they did to the tune of 100.00. My question is, what is involved when resetting the computer? The service person would not explain how he did what he did (resetting) to the computer. Anybody else go through this?

I have a 2002 Passat. I have the Bentley manual at home and can look up the procedure this evening, if no one else chimes in before then. However, you should tell your friend that there is a very inexpensive "tool" that uses a 9 Volt battery and plugs into your lighter. It provides enough voltage to keep the radio codes and computer functioning whenever you remove the car's battery. It has always worked for me.

Thanks TWD, how much and where would he be able to buy this "tool"? Is it something that could be made at home? You dont have to look up the exact procedure I was just curious if there was a less expensive way to replace the battery, although I have heard of people paying up to 250.00 for a new battery and computer resetting. Thanks.

Easily made, but this is so inexpensive that it probably isn't worth the effort to make it yourself. Made in The USA!
