Can I attain this without narrowing. I have been looking at installing adjusters and dropped spindles with smaller tires on my stock wheels. What do I need for the rear? Adjustable plates? Would that work or do I need other components. I am wanting a level uniform stance. There are just so many opinions in this thread. My head is spinning. Thanks.

If you want tires in the fenderwells you must narrow. No way around it. no need to go link pin unless you plan on running little 195's on 14's OR if you plan on tubbing. The link pin is a shorter beam and will give you more ground clearance if you are going little tires or tubs.

About the look I want to eventually get to, once I get another bus of course :)

But great job, very clean and yet still looks very functional.

I'm in the military so I don't get paid crap. So over the past week I've scoured this forum looking for an under 1000 dollar way to properly lower my bus 6in or so and have finally come to the conclusion its impossible. So wagens west I give in! I'm going to order a complete 4in narrowed front end spindle to spindle with 4.5in horse shoe plates in the rear. I hope your happy!

:) I want some details!! Love the stance and the look with those rims. What size rim/tire do you have? How did you lower it?

I have a 1970 and Im goin with a 4" narrowed adjustable king pin beam from a 1964-1967 split. It will bolt right in to a 1968-1970 bay window. I will also be running 3.5" drop spindles. The major issue will be that I will have to notch the frame to clear the tie rods, nothing an angle grinder and welder cant fix! I will also be tubbing the front wheel wells a bit. In the rear Im goin to run drop plates and maybe turn down a few notches. Parts are all ordered and should be in soon. I'll post pics when all is said and done. In my opinion this is probably the best way to really slam a bay.

I agree, but I hope the sideplates on the beam you ordered have both mounting patterns. L/P beams will NOT bolt right into a '70.

WideFive Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:42 pm

Beam bolt pattern changed in '70... '55-69 is the same, '70-'79 is a different pattern. Make sure you ordered the correct parts... or your beam won't work

WideFive Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:43 pm

Damn it, Colby! Beat me to it...

cmdog73 Wed Mar 24, 2010 11:54 am

If you ordered your LP beam from Wide-Five Aaron you shouldn't have any problems. Besides he's got the best prices and does great work. True quality built parts.

Thanks I'll give you the details...
The rims are BBS off of an audi they are 17x7 1/2
the front is lowered by adjusters and for the back I made my own spring plates for it. I really like the stance of it the most, sits just like I wanted it too.

Matty, did you have to modify the wheels any?

Good luck with that

What's wrong with 1/4"? The spring plate itself is less than that.

The spring plate have the right steel flex and does not have any weld on.

If your want something that' not going to break, you need to have something bigger than 1/4" (more like 3/8") and with the right steel (For the flexibility) and use TIG weld type for better penetration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_steel

I haven't seen any of the major u-plates being sold state that they are made from spring steel. The plates I've got had the edges beveled slightly then TIG welded to ensure proper penetration. I will try these, and keep a close eye on them for stress cracks. I don't do much freeway driving, just daily driver around town. If I begin to notice any sign of failure, I will remove them and clench my butt cheeks and drop the $150.00 on some "proper u-plates". Thanks for the advice everyone.

I don't like that method because of the extra unsproung weight.

Best choice you can make. Nates got the shit and will help out when it comes to tech. ask if he can hook up any other stuff, dont forget tie rods, ends, center pin, damper, shocks, etc. shit looks like it can lower a tank.
