Different style hatch release handle...no need for the indent

If you know 67 buses, you should almost be able to ID one from almost any angle/distance

i was told by an old time VW dealer mechanic from the 60sand 70s that the 67 had a taller 4th gear then the other 64-66 big nut trannys. can anyone confirm this. i know from experience my old 67 with the same engine and same size tires would go faster on the hwy then my 66 and 65 buses with RGB.

I looked at the Bus owner's manuals on the site.

'66 manual

page 75
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/8_65bus/page75.jpg
4th gear is listed as 0.82:1

'67 manual, dated 8.66

page 46
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/aug66bus/page46.jpg
4th gear is listed as 0.82:1

'67 manual, dated 12.66

page 46

4th gear is listed as 0.82:1

I spot-checked a few 64 and 65 manuals and they were 0.82:1 too.

widehatch Wed Apr 27, 2011 11:08 am

hmmmm. i guess that sums up that question

widehatch Wed Apr 27, 2011 11:10 am

i can ad this, since 1967 buses were 12 volt therefore the bell housing will fit a correct 12v flywheel and 12 volt starter. no need to grind out or rebush when installed in an older bus while converting from 6v to 12v

do bug radio block off/delete plates fit a bus also? Looks the same other than the chrome strips (but not all bugs have that).

WW has a separate part for a bus plate, and a bug plate w/o holes.

At the risk of revealing my ignorance...I've reviewed the site's vin listing for the 67 buses in an attempt to double check for the time of manufacture....my chassis plate indicates manufacture date of June 26 but the vin number of the bus, 257143056 is not listed. Help an old guy out..! Thanks.

Late late late 67?

Duck Thu May 31, 2012 5:57 pm

Must be a late bus....however the vin of the bus is well beyond the last number 1967 listed....I suspect I'm misreading something, but I'm certain the vin is correct...it is in 2 separate places at it should be. Incidentally, it is a 13 window walk through deluxe.

From
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php

257143056 is from June, 1967.

Maybe you were confused by the 21 prefix in the listings?

From that page:
"Beginning in the 1965 model year (August 1964), the VIN/chassis number begins with the 2-digit model number, i.e. 21 for Panelvans, 23 for Kombis, etc.
Refer to Models for the numbers. The 3rd digit is the model year, i.e. 5 indicates 1965."

Thanks, Everett...its been a long day! That clears it up.

For the record I have vin # 227065878, which is a standard with dual master cylinder, no reverse lights, a humped gas tank, and late dash.

Incidentally, I am looking for a pedal splash pan for my '67, in case anyone has one. I have posted a want ad in the classifieds as well.

So does ours. Sept 66 manufacture.

Mine is September 19 and has the high beams on the stalk.

Is the outlet cut out for the exhaust tip in my apron correct? It's about 7" to the left of center.

I believe (feel free to jump in here??) the hump in the gas tank was to catch an air pocket - which would "bubble out" of a full tank when the outside air temp went up; and fill with fuel when the tank heated. This would give the tank a larger fuel volume (after the air bubbles out) and just keep it (the fuel) from climbing the fill tube and spilling out.

This is from back when you used to "top up the tank" in stead of just stopping like you are supposed to do today.

In the "rear seat" FAQ there's mention that the spacing on the jailbars is different and unique for '67. There's also some question about the actual width of the seat back...not sure that it was ever resolved.

I seen this ad and have bought a frame for the drivers door and worried I have the wrong frame now.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1076979

I wasn't aware of a difference but to me the ad is referring to the glass being 67 only. Which I also was not aware of...

I think they are saying the numbers on the glass is a one year only code. Both my stationary piece and vent window have the same code:

My slider pieces are different. They both have D-02
M2/AS2

I never noticed this different number before. My early '67 has the D-02
M2/AS2 everywhere except the hatch has the later number. My late '67 has the late number everywhere except the two rear slider halves have D-02 M2/AS2. Sheesh.

Cool, never thought about the glass watermark on a '67 window. Just checked my Jan 1967 Bus and I have the same logo in the photograph on all of my windows (except my Safari windshields and the Westfalia louver windows). Ya learn something every day!

My June '65 westy has that glass logo in all pieces of the cab doors, one windshield, hatch glass and closet.

So does ours. Sept 66 manufacture.

Well I just HAD to read thru this thread.....
My '66 Singlecab Dec. 30 '66 has the high beam switch on the turn signal Stalk..... :?

And I found out a few years ago, my '66 has 1 side gate from a '67:

The stamping above the hinge is '67 only, when my '66 was redone in '78, it looks like they could only find one '66 gate (drivers side) so the pass. side got a slightly different gate, I had the truck for 6-8 years before someone pointed it out to me....
