View original topic: Rear pop-out windows '68 - '74 Interchangeable?
mytype181 Mon Feb 20, 2006 10:39 am

Thanks in advance for all the feedback.

Can the rear pop-out windows on a '68 fit a '72 ? Also is there any source for finding out what parts are interchangeable with other years?

Thx,
B

The glass will fit. The folks in this forum along with a good manual like "Bentley" should help. Most of us like to answer questions. It's probably better to ask about parts interchangability beacause there can be so many variables. Also Jason Hamiltons' Online Karmann Ghia Resource, www.type-14.com is a very good source of info.

No, they will not fit. The later quarter windows have a stamping glued to the leading edge to latch onto the pillar that is welded to the body. From top to bottom: 1955 - 1959; 1960 - 1971; 1972 - 1974.

72-74 is what you need to look for.

Is it possible to switch the edges? I didn't realize the hinge changed in 72. Is the glass the same size ? Thanks for the pics :!:

Ghias from 60 something up to 71 have an aluminum channel that attaches to the car starting at the A pillar following the doorframe around to the back and along the bottomside of the qtr window. The rubber seal for the door and the quarter window slides in this aluminum channel. For 1972 they removed this aluminum channel and used the body metal to form a lip in the same spot. The rubber is a different style and pushes onto the lip. For this reason they changed the hinge post as well as the exterior chrome finishing trim pieces.

I wouldn't think you would want to use early style posts with a post 72 car. There are lots of parts cars around to find the right pieces on.

Also doors from a 72-74 are there own breed. They will fit earlier cars and vice versa, but the trim and scraper seals will never work out.

If you're in need, I have a set of the 72 - 74 glass.

Ditto, with good latches.

I have a set of the 60-71 pop-outs. I am a bug man, and got these in a large cache of parts I bought. What is the price range of these. They are good condition with latches

Some thread apart - spin the latch counter-clockwise and they unthread from the portion that passes through the glass from the exterior. Others use a clip.

Here is a good photo of a clip assembly:

You need to knock the small c-clip off. They are tough to get back together if you replace the rubber seals.

You could just knock the roll pin out, and leave the part that passes through the glass with the windows. I guess it depends how good of a pal it is...
