What's in it now, Jack? Does it have a VW motor currently? If so, if it doesn't have an external filter added, it (the motor) doesn't really have one - just a fine screen accessable at the bottom of the engine oil pan. Do a search online here for more info.

The tail lights look like '67 Ford Fairlane laying on their side to me.

Does anyone know if these build manuals ever got uploaded anyplace? Moved house now and think it might be time to start the resto!!

Sad day...I just learned that Dick Dean's widow, Jeannie, passed-away this week. She was the model in all of the Shalako Ads and referred to herself in email as Shala Gal - a real supporter of her husband's legacy.

So I decided that the one small pipe coming out of each side of my buggy just seemed too little and grabbed these huge tips.

Really gives it that cartoon-y look ----I love it - only problem - they act like megaphones and have really made that car loud...again....arrgh - can't I have my cake and eat it too?

Stuff silencers or Supertrapps in 'em, Steve!

"Silencers"?

You'll have to call to see what the measurements are and check against what you've installed. The other option would be to put a shorty muffler from SuperFlo behind the tips, which would require cutting the exhaust tube a little shorter and clamping the muffler in place. Did that for the SR...

The exhaust sounded fine to me as you passed my office (across from IHOP) in Ronkonkoma maybe five minutes ago. 8)

...actually realized I had a larger problem - was running on 3 cylindars - caused the engine to be really loud - solved the spark issue and that solved the volume issue. By Wed it was all cleared up.

Took the wife and the buggy out to The Hamptons all day on Thursday - smooth sailin

Hey everyone,

You may remember a while back I posted asking help in locating a Shala project...well, I finally got one started.

Mine is based on a sand rail tube chassis. The wheelbase is a little longer than my fathers original design, by about 6 inches, but it's not going to be an issue. My brother, Keith "Kid Dean" and I agree that it'll probably help the handling. When you stand in front of the car, it does look a little long - partly from the length of the dash. But when you stand at the side, it looks just right. Anyway, you can look at the pictures and let me know what you all think. We didn't feel the need to cut 6 inches out of the frame. It'll provide a little more leg room, if nothing else.

I'm not putting doors on it but it probably will have a tube above and between the driver/passenger seats. That's how Dad had the original. It's going to be more of a roadster style, I guess you could say.

Anyway, I'm really excited to finally have this project underway. I couldn't do it at all without all the help from my brother, Keith. The guy is simply amazing at what he does and I know with his guidance, it's going to turn out excellent. Dad will be proud!

I hope you enjoy the pictures and I'll be posting more as things progress.

To Yessong - can you tell me where you found your side-view mirrors? I've been searching all over the internet and I can't find those anywhere. Thanks in advance!

<Sorry, pics will be in another post once I figure out how>

Okay, I'll leave it at that for now. If you want to see the other pictures, go to the galleries and look up "Rich Dean's Shala Roadster".

You can see in the first pic how the sand rail frame was modified and the second shot shows the dash and a little of the tub that we built around the tube frame.

I'll post more as the project moves along.

Hey Rich - neat start - excited to see how this goes.

I have to check my reciepts when I get home to see where I got the side view mirrors - I can tell you that I got the passenger on in a convex fashion to ge a wider field of view and it made all the difference.

I know exactly what you are talking about with the center over-head bar as that is a signature Dick Dean piece with all of the Shalako's he built..its one of the cues I look for when I see a car claiming to be one of his original builds.

On a not-so related note. I just wanted to express my condolences on the loss of your Mom. She was a great champion of your pop's work and had emailed me a hand-full of times. All the best.
