Tell them if they wont put the tires on that you want that you will take your business elsewhere.

That is page 51 of the 1978 VW bus owners manual. The manual is here:

Better yet, buy the correct tires someplace else and have them mounted there. They will get the message. Customer service goes a long way.

Can we get some close-up tread pictures of the Vancos, Agilis, and RA08s? Id like to see just how much they differ.

Not sure what rating the Jupiter has. People say "I bought 'em and I am happy" but they never post the sidewall specs.......

So the Continental Vanco-8's would be a safe bet to use on my 1970 bus?

Do they pass the "Karl test"?

:D

I wonder who else sells them. We don't have the Les Scwab chain down here in Fresno.

lovemybus Tue Apr 11, 2006 3:22 pm

So I see alot about tires here- Perhaps you can clear this up for me.
If I go into my local les schwab or tire store- and want a fat whitewall tire, that is "correct" -meaning "safe" or what Karl is explaining- for my 1968' Bus. What, specifically do I need to say to them?

Just a "C" Rated white wall tire? or?
Thanks

Randy in Maine Tue Apr 11, 2006 4:01 pm

I don't think I have ever seen correct size and load capacity white wall tires.

Print out the requirements and take them with you. Look around at tirerack, coker, or 1010 tires or someplace like that.

I am not sure, but these Capitol tires have the same model designation, look exactly like the ones that I have and spec out the same. They are also made in Korea like the jupiters.

Here is a quote from the guys site:

http://www.shagadelic.org/pod/archives/000017.html

Quote: Bought new tires today, all 5. On recommendation from Buslab, I called the guys at the Firestone shop on University Ave. in Berkeley. They quoted me a price of $50/tire + tax + mount/balance (+ $6/tire for road hazard protection). Warranty is 50,000 miles.

The tires are Capitol SV-820 185R14C 99P.

He states that he got them from a Firestone shop, might be worth a call.

They are listed here also, as are the Jupiters.

Hi there;

I'm thinking on installing: 205-75-14 on my 78 Westy or I should keep the 195-75-14 ?? I'm trying to get a more stability on the ride.

What you guys think ??

185R14C is the size. Don't put a P205-75-14 or P195-75-14 on a bus. Re-read the rest of the thread and see the links in the owners manual.

I put a second vote on these guys. I put a set on about 10k ago and I love them. Mine were on promotion for $55/tire!
One important thing to note though. They carry both 6 and 8 ply in these tires, all carrying the Jupiter SV-820 label. The Load Range D tires are the 8 ply.

The full tire label specifies the ply:
185R-14/6 Jupiter SV-820 for 6 ply (Load Range C)
185R-14/8 Jupiter SV-820 for 8 ply (Load Range D)

Don't let some dumb kid accidentally sell you the 6 ply for 5 bucks less a tire not knowing it.

Undecided between:

185R14:

Hankook RA08 or Continental Vanco -8

Both about same price range (RA08- 69.95 BD, Vanco - 8 $56.00 Tire Rack) and similar specs (Load Range D, Maximun Load 1874Lb...)

Any sug will be apreciated

Karl Tue Apr 18, 2006 6:25 am

I believe Ron at Bus Depot states that they are not similiar in specs.
The Vanco ad says they are M&S but they are not.
The RA08 is M&S.

I'm sure I'm opening myself up for some whipping here, but in my search for a tire that would make getting my camper stuck out on a two track less likely I found a few companies still make 28"x8.5" R-14's to appease the toyota and suzuki 4X4 owners, I bought a set of the BFG radial T/A K/O's in that size and am quite pleased they feel just like the jupiters did in the wind and dry pavement and work awsome on ice and wet pavement, a bonus for anyone living near the mountains on the west coast is they are stamped as a traction tire so you won't get told you need to run chains to get through the passes. they are rated at 1521 LBS(light truck rating, and take 44psi max air pressure, They fit inside the wheelwells and look very tough.

Now I'll add my own bit on the passenger car tire bit, its not about the weight handling its about the pressure I never met a pasenger type tire that would take the 40psi pressure that our manuals say to use, so you are forced to run underinflated, this makes the sidewall flex more than it should which generates heat and degrades the rubber wether you see the cracking this causes or not those tires become less and less reliable and eventualy blow. Running tire pressures under the manufactures recomendation is not safe on any vehicle ever overinflating tires within the tires specs only causes lost traction and uneven wear but underinflating them progresivly damages the sidewall
