Quote.what's the m code for those tow hooks?
i've heard that the 68-71 bumper guards are different from the '72's...though they look similar. Do you know?
Have you ever found a source for the rubber inserts of the bumper guards?
Lastly, what characteristics defined the "Clipper" and what years?.
M code for rear tow hook.... M29
I think the Deluxe bumper trims differ slightly in the fact some are called diamond cut and others are called slash cut. You are correct in saying they changed for later buses.
You can get repos of these as well as the rubbers for bumper overriders but they are not cheap.
The Clipper name was used in the 68 brochure but had to be dropped due to Pan Am having already registared the name. It discribed the Deluxe Kombi but was never actually used on the bus. |

From what I have gathered, the "Clipper" seems to describe a deluxe Bay bus that has an added accessories group that includes bumper trim that resembles the deluxe bumper trim of the split buses, jail bars, rear seat luggage bar, dash clock, and unique chrome accents for the interior.
Just from the posts here, it would appear that the '68, '69 and '70(?)Clipper bumper trim differs from the '71 and '72 by the black rubber inserts and metal contour detail. The '68:
and a '71 (I should take a better picture for the comparison):
I don't know if the Clipper package was continued past '72 or not. We have a very nice '68 example posted here, Devon-Dyno-Soar118 had a '72 until recently and I have a '71.
I'm still searching for any info on the Clipper, too. Don't hesitate to post what you know or PM me or email - whatever - thanks! |

The info i found on Clippers came from the VW Transporter and Microbus Spec guide 67-79. Ive also seen the clipper mentioned in some old promo stuff but it all says the same thing.
As far as ive ever seen all Deluxes came with clock, bumper trim etc etc as it was a replacement for the Samba which also had all the options as standard.
I will photo copy you some stuff when i get to my PC and post it up here for you. |

| Not to brag, but my Westy is a beige 1971 SO 63/2, a non-walk through with a floor-to-ceiling cabinet behind the driver and a combo gas stove/sink cabinet. Still has the original water tank/jerry can with spout and cap, original gas bottle (with German writing, regulator leaks though) and all original cabinetry/cushions/covers. The table is similar to a later Westy, but in the early grey formica. It also has factory installed Hella driving lights (with a cool green knob), original Westfalia tow hitch (the phallic looking one), Euro rear fog light, Eberspacher gas heater, front grille chrome trim, driver's side parcel tray, deluxe clock, accessory plug on dash and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. I love that the dash is all knobs, all the way across - it's insane! I understand the Bus itself is a "rarest of the rare". I'll get a few pics in the next week - it's in storage right now. |

The non walkthrough westy itself is not that uncommon yet, but some of your options and especially all of them at once are indeed a rarity. Please get onto posting pics of this ASAP for our viewing pleasure. |

The funny thing is, my Westy has the icebox DELETE option, too. The door that is normally the icebox is uninsulated and opens onto a wooden shelf, and it's all original.
I haven't seen too many nonwalkthrough Westies with the one piece stainless cooker/sink unit, and the jump seat against the driver's side wall (with a wedge shaped backrest cushion). I was told this Bus came in on the Volkswagen vacation plan (a.k.a. overseas delivery). I bought it from a friend many years ago, but he didn't know much about it.
One other oddball feature is the latch on the rear hatch - it is both lockable and openable from the inside. I've only seen one other of these latches, and it was in a picture. I've been a VW collector and professional mechanic for over 20 years. I've seen quite a few 'Dubs, but never one with the features and options of my own Westy. :) |

From the Transporter and Microbus book ('67-'79):
"In the August 1967 brochure, which first introduced the Bay Window
to the public, the Microbus was referred to as the "Clipper" and the deluxe version "Clipper L". In the end, Volkswagen was not allowed to use the name since it was registered for a type of aircraft by Pan Am Airline. Instead, Volkswagen had to use less inspirational names such as VW-Kleinbus or VW-Personen-transporter. However, the name "Clipper" is still used by many Bus enthusiasts for the T2a Microbus."
Pretty interesting book. Diggin' some of the features on the "Safari" model as well as the 4WD protos.

This Bus has a very similar interior to mine, except mine doesn't have those rings around the stove's knobs or that odd box/drawer on the right side of the lid. My cloth is the mustard vinyl, not the plaid, either. My poptop is a standard Westy top as well. Check it out -

The gas bottle and water jug are in the cabinet under the sink. |

| Huh. I think the latch is probaby a Euro/Canada part, as I've never seen another one in person before. I've had a couple dozen Buses, and I've worked on lots more. |

Not even.
I will have to take a snap of the rear hatch then, see if I get any comments. |
