I'm working through the fuel lines on my bus, pulled the firewall today to check in by the tank, and in doing so had to take the air cleaners off the carbs I believe they are either Solexes or Kadrons and they run electric chokes.
So peering in from the top, we have a butterfly for the choke, then a pump jet then a butterfly for the throttle.
The pumps and lower butterflies seem fine, but the chokes confuse me, the left hand carb is spring loaded shut by default (throttle closed) and the right hand is spring loaded open (full noise)
Is this correct? Does the bias change with power on? I've not battery installed due to fresh air in the battery tray..
What should they be set and what would you do if it were you bus? Starts fine but as soon as gets to warm idle (on choke) then its really hard to keep running without blipping

| Chokes should be closed on both carbs when cold, then open as 12v causes the heated element to expand and open them. |

The choke plates should both be equally closed or almost closed when the engine is cold, when the heaters in the round things on the sides of the carbs warm the bimetal coil spring in there they should slowly open.
You may have a broken spring or a heater has gone bad and someone has adjusted it to stay open on that side.
The first thing to do is mash the gas pedal to the floor and release it though, the chokes won't close when cold if the throttle hasn't been opened once. |

| The purpose of those top choke plates is to richen the mixture when the engine is cold. If the engine is cold and the key has been off for an hour + then when you push the throttle to the floor and release it both should be equally closed. When the engine or ignition key has been on for about 3-5 minutes the chokes should be fully open equally. If they aren't then the bus won't run correctly. |

So they could be the source of my slightly fuelly idle then as well, I assumed this was down to dodgy jetting but I haven't found anyone who can rolling road on Solexes yet..
Tommorow I'll put some power on them and observe, so full throttle to reset then they should open in 3-5 mins.
Should be fine to run without air cleaners that long?

Quote: Should be fine to run without air cleaners that long?
Air cleaners keep debris out of the engine and if the engine backfires it keeps the flames out of the engine compartment.
Those are the risks you have to assess. You know your bus and the road conditions there best. |

Have recently dealt w/ this on my bus . . . the heater on one side was not working which richened the mixture since the choke plate never opened properly.
Once you have both sides adjusted and working, a simple check on the heaters is to place your finger on the back of the round heater dome w/ the Solex lable. Once the bus has been running or at least switched on for a few minutes, these heaters should be very warm, almost hot to the touch. Check them both regularly - it's easy to do!
And yes, the heater coil spring can be fixed - It just ain't easy to do! I couldn't find a replacement in time for an upcoming trip, and the heater spring had broken off at one end where it's riveted. Eventually got that end soldered back on, but it took some patience.
