kombi buses are my favorite bus,but they gotta have them little ity bity taillights and those skimpy bumpers to stay in my stable

DMNCLNR Thu Sep 04, 2008 4:04 pm

Went back today, the doors to the house were open, and there was a car outside, but no one in sight. The rear bumper does have deluxe trim! The bus is a walk through with the spare tire in its correct place. There is a yard between me getting a good picture of the back of the bus, although there is no fence...

58 bg/swr 15 window,my parents were conned into trailering this pile of rare rust 2000 miles for little ole me. its the worst/most challenging car ive ever considered,i plan on doing a "preservation" restoration on it in 2010. see my gallery for more pics of this "treasure"

next rescue scheduled is the 56 kombi i bought a couple weeks back, its actually a pretty dry rig,the 58 is psycho

Adam,

If you do save this 58, theres some serious respect deserved.

are you going to clip it from the belt line onto another bus? haha.

hugheseum Mon Sep 08, 2008 1:21 pm

its actually a very strange bus,it hasnt been on the road since 67,it has front floors and all the window frames are solid not even pitting, its a shame it sat in north dakota so long,i'll have to make a special rack to cage the body while i do the rust/dentwork on the body, but the frame will be the donor 57 frame i have,im really not that scared

Yeah I thought it was quite odd how the bus rusted when I was examining the original photos. It appears like the very soft clay-like ground let the bus sink into it. with the top half of the bus so dry, its like it rained considerably and then dried out quick enough, but the ground retained lots of moisture.

its interesting to see how metal rusts and decays different in different parts of the country.

I have two buses pulled out of oregon, one from the northwest, and one from the south west, both have relatively solid chassis. One bus is very dry other than the rockers/front floor, and the other has rust in every nook and cranny. the rustier bus sat for 30 years in blackberries, while the other sat for 15 years parked next to a house.

IN RUST WE TRUST!

This bus turns out to be not quite so boring after all. I talked to the owner today who bought it brand new in Germany in 1967! This bus is still 6v, and has no reverse lights. The original red and white paint still show in places, but I don't know if it can be brought back. Original interior, and some cool accessories I will show after I pick it up. It also has the O.G motor, but hasn't been driven since 94.

Cool Bus, nasty rust, look at that frame separation, damn!

SWR/BG = 1959 model, in my opinion.

thats a mid april bus...I thought the model year changed in august, or somewhere around there. Are we considering early buses to have the model year change as early as april?

just confused.

EverettB Mon Sep 08, 2008 4:17 pm

Did he post the VIN # that indicates it's from April? I didn't see that.

Yes, August is the model year change.

It does look like an early '59 since it has a ribbed front bumper in Silver White.

Well shit, if we're going all wack with type 1's, I know where there are plenty of 'original paint ovals'.
So, to stay on topic, I found this while hunting around in my bus (truck).
Built on a 67' chassis in 1970!!
That pretty thing in the background is the widow of the guy who built it.
Parked in 1982. boo yah?

October would have been the model year change.
This rings true for nearly every manufacturer all the way into the 70s.
Coinciding with the release date of the next years model.
