Has anyone used the dual cannon or mega dual exhausts? How did you like? Which one would be more quiet?

I really like the look of the mega duals or even the 4 straight pipes, and was thinking with the baffles, they might not be too loud?

thx for any feedback.

I think they sound like an air compressor run amuck personally..... :)
The systems you spoke of may be more correct looking but I favor the 4 into 1 systems that are more mellow sounding.

Look on page 7.

Mega duals are LOUD - I have a set on mine. With the metal baffles they supply honestly dont seem to make a difference. I got a set of fiberglas baffles and they worked great - nice tone - not too loud, but they blew out in about 100 miles. I am having Al at Monro make me some parts to help the fiberglas last longer in the baffles.

Here's the bottom line - I love the look of the mega duals and after I am done spending another $50 for the fiberglass baffles and the modifications to the baffles, they should be really nice. Worth the hassle and expense? Nope.

If you want to still get them. CIP1 has the baffles (ACC-D-2538) - But you will need to fabricate am expander to go from 1.8" ID to 2.875" OD that you will need to attach to the end of the baffle to stop the gasses from blasting the hell out of the glass.

The four straight pipe setup my friend in Florida had on his buggy for a week and got them off due to them being way to loud. I went with the mega dauls I just wish the black paint would have burned off quicker as they are the cheaper exhaust to go with but sand their paint off on the tubes and paint them with high temp paint (I still have to do it myself) as The smell was bad for weeks. They are loud but I don't think it is that bad but love the sound and look but have been told they decrease horsepower but I haven't noticed a difference.

I've got dual cannons, and I love the look... but they are loud. I'm not annoyed with them yet, but that may change when the thing is actually on the road at highway speed.

Forgive the unfinished body work

Drive for about 1/2 hour at 65........huh?....What?...........Can't hear anymore......... Then again some folks like a Harley with straight pipes LOL.

While tuning and working on the car, I didn't mind it - but I like to drive it a lot and it was just too much when cruising at highway(?) speed. But putting around at 40-45 its OK, but what fun is that???

I guess I want to hear that semi coming at me at 90 LOL.

I know a 4 into 1 merged header isn't one of the choices but it's the best performing header of them all. The dual cannons and the Mega duals actually cause a loss of HP. It's your choice.

And you are right about the duals not being the best power - but they look so cool.......... Well - let's be real - if all we were after was speed, would we be pusting our butts trying to squeeze everything we can out of and engine that was designed to put out less than 40 horsepower? LOL

"New 1776 dual kads"

Throw a set of dual cannons or Mega duals and you have a horse with 3 legs. Why spend money on the Kads then throw away the performance gain by putting a set of dual cannons or Mega duals on it?

Jerry, is there any stats showing duals or mega's lose HP? Is it because of a lack of back pressure? The motor I am looking for use is a 1600 with dual 40 Kads.

Thx...

Looks like that part number comes back for a stinger. I have dual cannons and would love to quiet them down long enough to go to DMV for my 1st inspection. We have a sound check here 91 DB at 2000rpm max. I think.

Any one have ideas for a temproary fix?

I also went with Dual Cannons. You have to love noise with them they are super loud!! Nice thing is you can not hear the wife bitching about how or where your driving. I will say my next set will be a single pipe of some sort. I have heard the singles make more HP.

DB&Hot VWs did a dyno comparison, stock vs duals vs 4 into 1 header. I dont recall the actual base HP of the stock but the duals cut the hp by 5 which was about 10%. The header added about 8-10 HP over the stock exhaust.

Yellermanx Sat Apr 08, 2006 9:25 am

In the real world I don't think you are going to notice any difference in performance on a 1600. Not saying there isn't any, just not enough to notice on a 1600 that isn't put on a dyno. My first trip of about 25 non stop miles convinced me that mine had to go. Personally I think they sound like two out of sync Harleys. In general I believe the VW world looks down on duals of any kind. JMHO

regarding the baffle I mentioned being for a stinger, you are right - The prob is that it was the closest I could find. The flange is correct size and the length is almost there. But like I mentioned, you need to fabricate or buy something the takes the small end up to the proper size or the exhaust will blast the fiberglas out in no time. When I first put them in, the sound was good - not too loud and the tone was nice. If you were able to cut out a disk that would be 1.8" ID and about 2.875" OD and tack it to the end of the tube that slides inside the housing, it would do the trick. I can't so I am having what is basically an adapter pipe made to do teh same thing.

gdrbo - any idea of what issue - I would be curious to see that test. Not disputing what you are saying, but the base horsepower and the configuration of the engine really make a different in what the changes actually mean. Technically, I can understand that 4 into 1 should perform better becuase of scavenging, etc. But I don't see how the duals woul perform worse than stock if providing a less restrictive exhaust,

GDRBO Sat Apr 08, 2006 11:47 pm

No I don't recall the issue but probably since 2000. It was a stock 1600 and don't quote my but the HP was probably arround 48 (just your common garden variety well used motor). The duals split the firing order incorrectly and really mess with scavenging. A 1,3 and 2,4 split dual would work at least somewhat better, (or so I am told) but just isn't practical.

loud. my neighbors hated it!
but that was how i brought it home. first thing they told me at the inspection station was they had to go. no way no how would the car pass with them on. so i went with a 4 into 1 quiet pak. oddly named because it isn't the quietest thing in the world. LOL.pretty loud actualy with the pedal on the floor.but a different sound.

Mvovr Sun Apr 09, 2006 5:22 am

My duals are baffeled and they are actually quieter than the stock dune buggy exhaust however they are no where near quiet. I can also tell which bank is not in sync or firing as rock solid with the duals. They are nice for shows thought. I get many comments about a VW with duals..!! 8) Most folks think it makes it faster. Well as the old saying goes if it don't go chrome it!! I am keeping mine for now. At least they make people look around to see I am there and it has saved me a ton not having to install a radio. :P

With a true merge collector on a 4 into 1 exhaust the pulse from the previous slug of exhaust sucks the exhaust out of the next cylinder that fires. When that happens the vacuum created actually helps pull more fuel air into the cylinder. The more valve overlap your cam has the better. Kinda acts like a little turbo boost, instead of the fuel air charge being pushed in, it's sucked in by the exiting exhaust. A good flowing exhaust is one of the biggest bangs for your bucks. If you have a bone stock 1600 with a stock carb it'll be alright. I you have dual carbs or intend to upgrade to duals, I'd get the 4 into 1. With dual exhaust you need a pulley gaurd to get an inspection sticker. With a Tri-Mil style you can get away without one.
