They want me to bring my '59 "bug" back in to get inspected. She said there is a problem with the VIN check and they need to see the car in person.
I bought the buggy recently with a Wyoming title which does match the pan just fine. I initially took it to the DMV in Las Vegas. They told me I'd have to title it as a special construction built in 2006 unless I could document when the body was put on (which I can't). This would require a yearly smog check or yearly smog exemption. So I had a constable here in Boulder City do the VIN check and I took that to the DMV. I got through the title and registration process fine despite him writing "dune buggy" on it instead of "bug" or "coupe." So there are legal plates on the buggy now but I don't yet have a title, it is supposed to come in the mail. I know it's because somebody down the red tape trail saw "dune buggy" and can't stand seeing people driving anything more fun than their Volvo. I wish I'd thought fast and said "it's in Colorado for the summer" or "It's in about a thousand pieces presently, which one would you like to see?" I'm considering doing nothing and seeing if I get the title or taking the body off the pan and taking it in on a trailer, what do you think? (the later is a joke of course) Any advice???? |

Man , that sucks. I figured Nevada would be cool but they apparently have been taking lessons from the evil empire to the west.
At least the wyoming deputy was cool. He asked if it wasn't mostly VW,
I said "All of it except the top part" So he kept it VW.
So how is she running anyway?

Hey Kevin, she's running great! The tranny noise turned out to be one of the universals, not that big of a deal. I cleaned the carbs, added some shocks, seat belts, and some annoying (to the neighbors, hehe) dual glasspacks. We went to the dunes this weekend and had a blast, the gear ratio is wonderful.
I'm sure the rest of Nevada is pretty understanding about out of the ordinary vehicles but I'm stuck with the Las Vegas DMVs and we're every bit as uptight as Southern Calinofunia. I will get it figured out one way or another. There's always the Colorado DMV (if Nevada will give me BACK the Wyoming title...) Here's a recent picture of it - I gave it a quick wet-sand & some wax just for kicks.
How's the tow'd? I don't recall if it was a long term project or a runner? |

Seems to me that if you have a VW pan (which is the "frame") you should have no problem. It is not "special construction" since you did not replace the frame or disturb the VIN that was on the frame. It might be that the DMV person you dealt with isn't used to cars with seperable chassis and therefore didn't realize that you had the original chassis underneath.
If that fails, take it down to Kingman. Arizona will register just about anything!
I agree about the Vegas DMV. If you were in a cow county you would have had no problem.

The towd is moving slowly. It is a project that I think will run this summer, but might not be pretty for years!
You got me in trouble. My wife saw the picture and said " I liked that buggy, why couldn't you make it shiny like he did? "
Thanks Man! LOL
Glad she's doing good. If I can help with the title problem ,let me know. |
