I know it's a sign of age, but I can remember a "gas war" when my dad drove up to a station and filled our '59 Mango Bus and the price was 12.9 cents per gallon. The young kid (with zits all over his face) asked dad how to use the church key (he'd never been in a bus before), then filled up the tank, cleaned the windows, checked the oil ("you're down about 1/4 of a quart, sir, no problem") and then gave dad the receipt to sign......$1.24 for a little over 9.5 gallons. Oh....and there were green stamps that came with the receipt. Dad made me keep them to give to Mom when we got home.
Thanks for letting me indulge in a little memory. Dad's smiling as I tell this story, I'm sure.
Today.........$1.89 in Gilroy, California.......and no green stamps. |
