I don't think that would be a good idea. According to my sources:
Moderate Effect, not recommended
for continuous use. Softening, loss of strength,
swelling may occur.
Don't think about ABS, either. Even worse:
Severe Effect, not recommended for ANY use. |

Here's why I ask. The PO of my buggy welded in the sending unit plate on the gas tank, the buggy is together and I do not want to pull it apart. It has a flip top gas filler, I want to change that to a golf car cap that has a float in it with a gauge. UncleBob covered this previously in a post but I am assuming never figured it out.
Here lyes the problem, if you have ever looked at the threads on these type of caps they are very large, I can't find anyone who can thread me a piece of 2" pipe with these threads. I thought I could cut out a gas can (plastic) top, but turns out they are smaller.
Pvc I thought I might be able to thread myself
Guess what I need is a old gas powered golf car someone is parting out and cut the top out of the tank, then I can epoxy those threads to a pipe and insall it into the rubber hose, then simply screw the cap on. Hmmm
Anyone got an old golf car around?
Just had another thought, WATCH OUT, I wonder if the threads on a boat gas can that uses a float style gauge are the same, I could weld that to a piece of pipe. |

I'm guessing you're wanting to use something like this:

I'm not sure where you'd find the mating half short of cutting up a garden tractor fuel tank, but those are on the E place, too. Good idea considering you don't have any kind of fuel gauge now. Sure beats walkin'! |

Sorry I let you down, Viperbgy.
I know there's gotta be a way to do this. I'm telling you, if someone designed a VW gas-cap with an integrated twisted float design, which used a glass lens, they'd make money.
Look closely at the design of the boat tank gauge. It looks like you could just pull the sender piece out and epoxy it into a regular gas cap, don't it? |

uncleBob when I re-read that after I typed it, it sounded rude to me....it was not meant how it sounded by any means. What I meant to say was I had gone back and found the post and nothing ever came of it, no let down here, I respect your knowledge.
I have a buddy that does mobile golf car repair, he had a cap and float gauge same as above that measures 8" long, he gave it to me. It is the perfect length because of where the current cap is mounted. I will make it work, just havn't figured out exactly how, YET.
Your idea is good, but I don't have a stock filler neck so I do not have a vent without the right cap. I will have to figure out where that cap vents before I do anything like that.
Have you ever looked at the threads, their huge, thats where the problem lies. |
