what years were the diesel jettas made in germany as opposed to mexico. certain yrs better?

As far as I know, all of the diesel Jettas up through '92 were made in Germany; the VIN is the dead giveaway - if the first digit is a W, it is German-made(3 is Mexico, 1 is USA). The turbo diesel A2 'EcoDiesel' Jettas were built in either Germany or Canada, if memory serves correctly.

At this age, build quality isn't too much of an issue.....how they were cared for by their previous owners is.

My '85 Wolfsburg Jetta Diesel is German but the chassis (body) was actually fabricated in Mexico. It is stamped "hecho in Mexico" on the passenger side inner fender under the hood. I'll check the VIN as I can't remember what it starts with. The door sticker sez West Germany.
