Any ever put a 2.0 air cooled vanagon engine in a 412? I have a 74 412 with a bad engine and i have a good 2.0 to drop in it. Any advice from anyone?

Should bolt in, but I assume you'll need to use the 412 tin.

The only thing you'll need to look into is the exhaust. The Vanagon 2.0 has a different exhaust port than the earlier T4 engines. Other than that, it should bolt in using some of the original 412 parts and tin.

I run a 2.0 liter bus engine in mine with no problems in place of the stock 1.8. However as Tuna indicated 1979-1983 Vagagon engines (CV and some GE code engines) have square exhaust ports instead of the earlier oval style and will require you to change the heads or get Vanagon heat exchangers. Be aware that the bus 2.0 will perform similarly to your stock 1.8. Don't be expecting Porsche 914/912E Type IV 2.0 power.

Thanks,

Kevin

Be aware that with the 4-speed 411/412 the pinion drive shaft is of a smaller diameter than all other aircooled gearboxes (type 1, 2 and 3)! so the 2 liter clutch plate won't fit.

So preferrably you need to swap flywheels with matching clutch plates as well and hope the old 210/215 pressure plate can handle the extra torque of the 2 liter. Or better yet, buy new 412 clutch parts while you're there  and don't forget to set end-play.

My '71 411 wagon has a 2-litre "bus" engine in it, complete with hydraulic lifters. The previous owner did this, not me, so I don't know what kind of modifications he had to do. But I can say this: this 411 just hauls ass! I have two other 412s with 1.8 litre engines and the 411 has a lot more power. Porsche-like? Well...maybe a 914...with a tail wind. But it's just a great engine, smooth as butter, quiet, no valve adjustments. So I can highly recommend it!

Thats exactly what iam runing on my 73' 412 sedan, a 2.0lt bus motor with the l-jetronic fuel injction sytem to go along with it. The only mods iam making on my car is with the slave cylinder and some head and cam mods. I got a friend that has his 412 sedan done almost the same way and it rocks. Iam not much of a hot rodder but i will enjoy the hydroulic lifters and fuel injection upgrade.

I was told that the bus motor mounts differently, but you guys are saying that it bolts right in?

Yes it mounts in with 412 flywheel+parts sized 215 or 210mm. Vanagon 228mm flywheel also mounts in with minor reaming, but you have to make a custom cluch disc sized 228mm.

yes it will fit fine i have a 2lt in mine running kadron carbs goes well and the 210 clutch hanels the power fine dude

i have the 1800 heads on mine tho so i use the standard heat exchangers

but what if it is an automatic?

No harder to do with an automatic than a standard. If you have it available use the torque converter out of the Vanagon instead of the one out of the 412, much higher stall speed for more zip off the line. The best Vanagon torque converter to use will have a "Z" stamped on one of the three mounting bosses. I think the "H" torque converters from the water cooled Vanagons will work as well but have never actually run one.
