A few weeks ago i purchased a used rail from a guy i work with. I am believed to be the fourth or fifth owner and the title has been lost somewhere along the line. I need to get the rail registered in order to make it street legal. It has a nine digit VIN stamped in the frame. Is there any way to track down who the vehicle is titled to by the VIN? Every site i have seen requires the 1981 and newer 17 digit VIN to do a search. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

If you are a member of the American Auto Club they can do a VIN lookup for you. If not, contact your local DMV and they should be able to do a title search.

You might be able to get a carfax report on it, if it was titled then they should have it. Not sure if they still have a free offer or not.

You should be able to get a law inforcement officer to run the VIN# and it should come up that way. They told me at the tag office in order to get tags on my Baja I needed to do the same thing since it has been off the road for so long when i got it. If an officer runs it for you it should come up in the last person's name that had it registered. Hope this will help.

I know this is an old post, but in case someone else is searching for their vehicle ownership history, Carfax only works for cars made after 1981. I haven't been able to find any services that report this kind of information without a sizable fee.
If anyone else has better luck, I'd be interested. |
