Funny I saw this today, because just yesterday I read this:

http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=97526

and it kinda gave me the shivers. I urge you to read it, just to be aware. I love the slider window mod but I mighta never thought of what could happen.

my 4 legged kid(RIP) is far smarter than most 2 legged off spring. getting her head caught by opening the big sliding door was NEVER in question.

you go to the slidinghandle and there's the girl. quielty saying "open it"

and to ad to those who think it's dangerous to have an opening window on a sliding door side. WTH. don't open the door into your dumbass off-spring.

that and my rear opening slider window isn't fully overlapped by the sliding door.. so even your dumbass college buddies and your kids dumbass friends should survive (albeit against Darwin's ideals)

Just pointing out a potential hazard for someone doing this mod to be aware of, not to scare them off doing it. There's no need to be so militant about it.

:bay_blue: Boy! just read 10 cent post on the window, at first I thought it was cool, but now maybe not . This is definitely something to think about. Thanks 10 cent! :D Think I'll just stick to my rear hatch open and my bug screen .

any chance of a list of parts needed

I used:

1 front bicycle brake cable
1 passenger inside door release. (I used a Beetle release because I had one but a Vanagon release is virtually identical in function (only aesthetically different)
1 sheet of galvanized sheet metal (forget the size) for mounting.
1 pkg of 1/16" aluminum double ferrules (only 1 needed) http://www.snareshop.com/images/DF.png (the kind you crimp with side cutters)
6 1-1/2" screws with nuts and washers (to fasten sheet metal to door)
You will also need to space the metal inwards approximately 1/4" to accommodate the door release. I used nuts between the panel and the door to accomplish this
1 pkg 1/4" of cable clamps to keep the brake cable in place. http://www.elecdirect.com/images/pageheaders/RubberInsulatedCableClamps.jpg

I did a similar mod (but not quite as clean inside as BugGuy's nice work). But I also added an always-locked door lock so it takes two hands to open the hatch from the inside as a safety measure so no one can fall out the back on the freeway.

I've never used it to escape from a bear coming in the side door but I'm glad it's there.

Reading your post was the inspiration for my project. I like what you did for the two-handed operation, however, for me and my wife, I felt it a little unnecessary so I neglected to include it. My dogs won't/can't release the latch and, should they do so, I doubt they could lift the door. A recommended idea if you have children travelling with you. Besides, doing it on a budget, I did it with stuff I had lying around the garage. I only bought the brake cable and would've had to buy a length of rod too. 8)
