I want to change out the Trans of my diesel rabbit from a 4 speed Trans to a five speed. Are there any outward indicators to tell weather a 5 speed is for a gas or diesel? I know where there are several but the owner can't remember which is which.
Thanks |

Transmissions are not diesel-specific, although they did get different gear ratios from the factory than gas engined cars did. If you are changing a 4speed to a 5speed, be aware that some linkage parts are different between the two.
Any 8v Mk1-platform 5-speed trans will work, and you could even use one from an 8v gas-engined Mk2 Golf/Jetta if you were in a pinch. You might have to swap mount brackets, but the trans itself is a bolt-up. |
