Car is looking great! Just curious, where did you get the "dome" light? I need some light for the night runs!

Gregorio Tue Jul 13, 2010 9:38 pm

@AZ-BUG

Thanks, man! I love the look of your Class 11 bug, btw. I got the dome light from the following site: http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index..._tubes.htm

Just scroll down a bit and look for Ulite. Very little power draw and puts out some good light, enough to read a map, etc.

Alright, been making some more progress and actually have been driving the bug around town. I'll be taking it on a hunting trip in October so I want to get everything dialed in over the next month.

Picked up some mirror mounts from McKensies as well as a Yakima roof rack and cross bars, which seem to fit really well. Should work great for what I need, definitely stout enough.

Now, some questions for you guys. I'm at the point where I need to change my oil after the initial break-in (which is why there's a temp line connected). I'm trying to figure out where to mount my oil filter/thermostat, and wanted to get some input. There seems to be two areas that might work, up on the firewall and down behind the pulley/rear cage.

* Is the firewall too flimsy to support the weight of the filter adapter, thermostat, filter, and lines?
* Will the area behind the pulley under the muffler get too hot for the filter?

Sweet job on this project. Love the Olive drab green and blackout on everything.

I would vote for the firewall since the filter will be out of harms way as well as away from the heat from the exhaust. I would suggest a plate on the other side of the firewall to distribute the load and prevent the firewall from cracking. Mirrors are cool... how much are they? Also, on the Yakima rack, do the rear clamps feel solid? Is there enough of a lip there?

Make a plate for it from the inside of car . Drill through firewall to hold it together.

very nice build!

@ AZ-Bug -

Sorry, didn't see your post! I got the mirrors/mounts from McKenzies and I think they were around $50. The Yakima rack is pretty solid, definitely enough lip to grab onto. I used it offroad for 4 days in Wyoming while hunting and had no issues, even with animals up top.

And thanks for the input on the filter everyone - I ended up sandwiching the firewall between two flat plates and placing it there. So far, so good!

I have heard from a few local engine builders, that mounting the oil filter as you have it in the pic, (horizantal) will allow cavitation in the filter and can cause the oil to foam. A few companies do sell filter mounts that operate this way, and have led to engine failure according to these guys. If you have the option, you might consider allowing the filter to hang down, rather than horizontal. It will also may filter changes cleaner as the oil will stay in the filter... just a thought.. nice car!

How's this car doing? Very cool build.

Gregorio Sun Dec 18, 2011 11:29 pm

Car is doing great. I need to get it out a bit more often than I do now, but that's how life works sometimes. My latest upgrade is a set of JJ Johnson no-hop kit adapters. Here's a link to my build page on the NorCal Bajas forums:

Car is looking great! One thing though, I sure hope you broke in the engine with a filter attached instead of just this bypass hose :shock:

Gregorio Thu Dec 22, 2011 2:24 pm

Yep, that was just temporary as I was still trying to figure out everything. :)

Great job! This is my favorite project build. I am trying to start my baja project and this is very similar to what I want to do. How much have you put into your build minus the motor cost?

rickb801 Sun Jan 08, 2012 1:08 pm

This is one of my favorite builds! Where did you go hunting in Wyoming? Wyoming, around Pinedale is one of my favorite places to ride.

Gregorio Sun Jan 08, 2012 6:25 pm

@rickb801

Thanks! The past couple of years I've been out near Casper, but I love everywhere out there. Hope to make it back next year!

@T-Dubs83

Hard to say, and I don't know if I want to know the answer :) I'm guessing without the engine and transaxle rebuild probably around $2K. Engine and transaxle rebuild add quite a bit more, but I want this to last a long time.

And, getting ready to put these BTR's on the front :)

Hey Greg! How did you end up painting your body after having it media blasted? Did you do it yourself?

T-Dubs83 Sun Jan 29, 2012 8:34 pm

Also, which Painless wiring harness did you go with?

Gregorio Sun Jan 29, 2012 9:09 pm

Hey T-Dubs -

I used about 10 cans of Aervoe spray paint, came out great and is easy to touch up when running through the rocks and brush, although that was done after getting it primered following the media blasting.

For the harness, I used the Painless 8-circuit Universal Harness which has just enough wiring for everything I need.
