I currently have a swing axle which works fine but I am interested in converting to a IRS so.....
How much work is involved to do so?
Are there conversion kits out there?
How much would it cost me to do this conversion?
What are the advantages to an IRS over the swingaxle?
Thanks |

| Where might i go about purchasing the parts needed for the conversion? Or do I need to make all these parts from scratch? |

i beleive you have two choices, either weld in the whole torsion, or weld pivots onto your torsion. if you choose the first, this is all you need. if you want to weld pivots onto your torsion, you need to buy the pivots(moore parts, pac customs..) and get a jig to set it up |

Would something like this work? |

You would be better off with a bug rear torsion. There is no aftermarket support for the bus torsions so replacement or upgrade parts are hard to find.

| CIP1, Moores, and a few others sell the pivot points for like $20. I think someone on the www.volksrods.com site sells the Jig to make it right for I think $65. ya the bus torsion just ain't right for a baja |

has anyone used this jig? i was going to make my own but if anyone has used this one succesfully it might be worth it just to buy them. looks like its just tack welded together but could be so it wouldnt expand and get missaligned from welding i was also woried about this problem when building mine.

| Why can't you use an IRS trailing arm as a jig? Bolt it to the spring plate, attach the pivot brackets to the arms and line them up on the torsion tube and tack it into place. I must be missing something here. That seems like it would be much easier than building a jig. Im sure there is a reason Blindchicken built the jig. Can anyone tell me why the arm and the jig aren't equal? |

| the jig keeps everything in stock orientation. i know a guy that used the arms themselves as a jig for an IRS conversion on an early bus. the reason he used the arms instead of the pre-fab jig was to put the pivots where he wanted and eliminate what camber would be there if the bus was kept stock height. |

$75 seems way outta line for a jig. I built mine out of scrap and then sold it for $20 when I was done with it.
If you have the skill to weld in new pivots, you have the skill to make a jig. Seriously. |

...if you've got an IRS car handy (and stripped) as a jig for your jig!
I do, so I am making my own, but I can see where borrowing your buddy's car and removing it's suspension might not be worth it.
And that's assuming you're doing you own welding. |
