swingarms are Roll-O-Matics

For the record, the above image is of a Corvair. Chevy switched to IRS a few years before VW.

I thought it was a Type 34.

Corvair vs. Corvette

Corv-ette... girls version?
(Smurf -- Smurf-ette? Cigar -- Cigar-ette?)

Corv-air... air-cooled Corvette?

What's a Corv anyway? Better just stick to the 'Dubs.

...but I'm not a Chevy guy.

rubsterob Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:26 pm

Haha good theory but I think chevy takes a close second to v-dubs

rubsterob Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:28 pm

Ohh but I think the corvair is the worst chevy made. What's with the twisted fan belt?

has anyone used this jig? i was going to make my own but if anyone has used this one succesfully it might be worth it just to buy them. looks like its just tack welded together but could be so it wouldnt expand and get missaligned from welding i was also woried about this problem when building mine.

Wolf

This has since expired. He no longer has postings here. Does anyone know where to get one now? Do you absolutely need the jig to weld in the pivots? Not sure how I'd make one since I don't have an IRS pan handy. If I did, I wouldn't be converting my swing, I'd just use the IRS pan, lol.

Green bug Guy Wed May 26, 2010 1:19 am

you need the jig if you dont want camber problems! hahah and there are many more reasons but anyhoo you want them!

Green bug Guy Wed May 26, 2010 1:20 am

oh and you can get them from most shops that deal with off road vw's and stuff of that sort!

Dubbers Toy Box rents the jigs out

A few years ago I tried to convert my rail from swing to irs with out using a jig and I messed it up. This spring I redid it with a jig from pacific customs, and it was it was worth ever dime I spent on the jig. Ya, I was $100 for the jig but it went in perfect on the first try. I couldn't be any happier.

Can I do this conversion with the baja body still on the pan?

Green bug Guy Sun Aug 29, 2010 7:23 pm

yes. yes you can.

How much work is involved to do so?
Are there conversion kits out there?
How much would it cost me to do this conversion?
What are the advantages to an IRS over the swingaxle?

Thanks

I have a great idea... bring it to my shop and i'll do the conversion for you. I have the jig and all the tools to do the job.

Sorry for thread jacking but I thought this would be a good place to ask.
I know you can cut the whole back end off an IRS Beetle and weld it on to another pan but can you cut off a bus back end and weld it to a bug pan? I know a guy cutting up a bus so I thought I could just do that.

Look at the seventh post in this thread from BCR

JDub113 Wed Sep 22, 2010 11:17 pm

So what are the pros and cons for just welding in the pivots into your old swing axle VS. Welding in the whole irs torsion bar in? Whats the best way to go?
