View original topic: Please Give Me Advice SOON!!! My GTI 1.8T Is Smoking! HELP!
coolj30 Wed May 24, 2006 7:10 pm

I just bought a 2003 GTi 1.8T 3 days ago. I love it! But just last night I was sitting in a parking lot for a minute or two just letting it idle and when I took off it start to smoke very bad from the exhaust. I stopped shut the car off and got out and it smelled like it was burning oil. I started it back up and it had stopped smoking. I then drove the car today about another 20 miles and then I was sitting in my girlfriends driveway waiting for her and it started to smoke again this time even more smoke. It was a huge cloud and filled the street. I shut it off and started it back up and drove it about 1/4 mile and it stopped smoking. The car only has 35,000 miles on it so what could it be? My guess is the seal in the turbo is bad???
Please help me I am in need of any advice.

It sounds like the turbo died on you. If it smokes ALOT when it's just idling and not too much when you're actually driving, then that is the main symptom of a turbo with bad seals. Definately take it back to the dealer and have them fix it for you.

what colour is the smoke?
where is the smoke coming from?
does it make a different sound?
what does your boost guague say?
have you done a compression test?
what does the oil look like?
what does the collant look like?

Do you know anything about cars?

could be:
1) headgasket
2) rings / piston crack
3) turbo
etc...

need more info...

White smoke from the exhaust the engine does not run any different when it starts to smoke the boost gauge also does not do anything different. I have not done a compression check. The oil looked like it needed changed so I just changed it with mobil 1 and a bosch filter and it has not smoked yet since I changed the oil.

I have only had the car a week and I got it from a dealership so I do not know the history of it or how the car acts much yet.

pull your plugs.

smel them for coolant.

burning coolant makes white smoke. Could be a cracked head - but more likely a sm all leak in your head gasket.

check the oil again. it sounds like it will be "milkier" than regular oil.

take this very seriously. fluid does not like to be compressed (read: blown apart piston/head/valves)
