...can it be done with the engine in the car or does the engine have to come out?

any known problem areas or certain things i should be aware of? i've never done it but i'm pretty confident in my work. i'm just looking for a heads up to any troubled areas.

thanks in advance.

If it's anything like a bug, or hell any other aircooled engine that I know of, the engine does need to be pulled to access one set of head bolts.

It can be done but it is not that easy. The 912 engine bay has a bit more room than a bug and better access from the top which makes it do-able. Nid's right though - I would drop it to make it easier on you.
