I am going to use this gun to spray primer before a MACO job on my daily driver. Any suggestions on primers to use?

Evil Box Thu Dec 07, 2006 5:25 pm

You might want to try Nason SelectPrime 2K Urethane Primer. I've used this primer plenty of times. It's reasonably priced and holds up very well over time. It comes in gray or buff color. Here's a link for it...

Yes I will be using Urethane and doing a bc/cc. I hope to start at least the primer this weekend, I will post some reactions and pics after I start.

Keep us updated. Very interested on your progress.

Ok, so read through 4 pages of this and now I'm pretty interested.

It seems that this makes sense as opposed to spending $800 on a compressor, and another couple hundred on a gun.

Am I correct when I assume that ANY hvlp gun would work on a turbine unit? So if I bought the HF unit, I could put a DeVilbiss gun on it?

Any other people use this with as good of praise as the original poster? Or bad reviews? Actual experience is worth more in my book than educated though unsupported opinions...

No, the turbine unit has its own gun. The whole unit is a standalone sprayer that only needs power.

Right, I see that it comes with it's own gun, but was curious if I could make it bigger, better, faster, stronger. (sorry, excuse me while I get carried away..)

Could I make it better by replacing the HF gun with a better gun?

They should recieve the same amount of pressure at the gun. The turbine gun takes a much larger hose diameter though. Maybe if you could make up an adapter you could use a different gun if you wanted to. I don't see why not, but you would have to look at the specs for the turbine you were interested in and the gun you intend to use and see if you could work something out.

Personally I've used quite a few HVLP guns over the years and the stock turbine gun provides the same results. The old saying is still true, "It's not so much the gun as the guy behind it". The quality of the guts are much better on the higher priced HVLP guns though, and it would be interesting to see if you could work something out for that. I never thought of doing it, but I suppose it could work if you wanted to spend the time to engineer an adapter for it.

If you look, the HF HVLP guns require a lot of pressure and volume. Way more than the turbine will produce. The gun that come with it was designed for the volume and pressure the machine uses. I have the unit they sell that is slightly more powerful than the one in this post(the gray one). It works pretty good but after just purchasing a real spray gun (a cheap one) there is no comparison in the quality you can acheive. If you don't have an air compressor and don't mind color sanding these turbine sprayers aren't all that bad.

That's a good question- Bump.

I don't know about hvlp, but treat por15 with care when spraying - contains isocyanates, same as 2-pack paint.

I too am in the process of prepping a car for paint. This car will be a driver not a trailered car and certainly not a show car. So i don't want an expensive paint job that I will cringe at every time I hear a tap on the hood... It probably going to be the only one I ever do, so I cannot justify spending hundreds on a paint system. I would be very interested to see actual results with some of these "inexpensive" HVLP turbine systems. The original poster seemed to have results that I could live with as a drive...

Good thread. I had never even heard of these 'turbine' guns before. I was just planning on painting my car with a HVLP compressor gun. I would need to see more results from people using these kinds of guns.

What kind of paints is everyone using? The rustoleum mentioned in the first post was the Oil Based enamel? Urethane paints?

njlunchbox Wed May 30, 2007 1:54 pm

I just painted my 72' Bus with a Wagner HVLP sprayer and Rustoleum Professional Oil Based paint, thinned with acetone. I put on three coats and it came out really great! Thought about wet sanding and re coating at a later time. I know painting it this way is not the best, but since I live at the Jersey Shore and it is not garaged why waste thousands on a professional job. How many coats should I have put on? I've read anywhere from 3 to 6 coats...I figure if it looks great and completely covers the 2 coats of primer I put on that should be good enough. What are everyone's thoughts?

JOGR Fri Jun 01, 2007 7:45 pm

I'll second that.

I am getting ready to paint the bus... I too am making a daily driver that will get used! left out over night, in the rain etc. I have painted four cars in the past. each time I have used hardware store oil based paint, rust oleum, etc. each time I have also used a different spray gun. The most expensive one I have used was a $100 husky gun from Home Depot.

This time I thought, how about I really use Auto paint here, dosen't the bus deserve it? well sort of I bought the rayflex paint...

I also bought the $59 blue turbine system from HF. I painted the engine lid today. First two coats with the Husky gun, way too much overspray for HVLP (in my mind) and just not really laying it down nice. second two coats with eth HF turbine... SWEET! layed it down really, really nice. the best I have done, and it was over two coats of not very well sprayed paint. I will not hesitate to paint my whole bus with this gun.

my two cents!

Sounds like something to atleast try.

lunchbox.. which Wagner did you use? I've been looking at the HVLP wagner 850e. Any pics of the work on your Bus.

njlunchbox Sun Jun 03, 2007 12:27 pm

I used the Wagner fine spray model. It's the one that looks like a vacumm cleaner, with the hose attached to the sprayer that has a metal cup. You can get them at Lowes for around $98 bucks. A little expensive but does a great job. I will be posting photos of my bus here shortly. Just make sure you do a really good job preping the body before you paint. Any imperfection will show 10 times more with a new coat of paint. I sanded mine down but not completly to bare metal and you can see some areas where it is uneven. Also I noticed dents that I never noticed before. But it still came out good.
