Wow, I didn't realize this thread got stickied!

I have to buy a new gun. I painted a pair of wheels and got distracted by the kids and forgot to pull the gun apart to clean it. It sat for a week before I went back in and it's completely clogged with dried paint inside the gun body.

Sigh.

BTW: Rustoleum told me to thin with acetone instead of mineral spirits. Came out with a flat finish. Grrr.....

HF also has a more expensive sprayer described below for 89 bucks. It looks like it might be their top of the line model. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has this one or by reading the tech specs can conclude that it is a better setup than the cheapie blue 49 dollar model. Thanks

HIGH VOLUME LOW PRESSURE COMPLETE SPRAY KIT

Just for those who are keeping track.

so anybody else have any photos of cars painted with the HF sprayers? I am looking to get my car primed at least with one of these.

reefskinner Sun Aug 12, 2007 3:32 pm

So folks are using these with oil based paints with favorable results. What sort of result can one expect using a true single stage automotive paint, or even a base and clear? I would also like to see more pictures of cars painted with one of these, particularly the Harbor Freight ITEM 44677-1VGA model.

DurocShark Sun Aug 12, 2007 3:48 pm

That's a good question. I plan on exploring automotive paints this fall and I'll post my results (of course).

I'm glad to see that some of us are starting to realize that the HVLP turbine sprayers actually can spray automotive paints and do a good job of it. Some of the ones I've seen posted here are the lower end turbines, but it looks like they can be used also.

My sister cracked up her 2005 Hyundai Elantra a few weeks ago and I sprayed the front fender, drivers door, and blended the front bumper cover with my HVLP turbine. The color was dark metallic blue (Hyundai Moonlit Blue). I sprayed it with Dupont Chromabase basecoat and Nason Urethane clearcoat. My nieghbor was shocked (he's also a classic car guy with considerable autobody experience) and said the result was flawless...

Just in case you were wondering if these units can spray the same paints that Autobody shops do... 8)

Yes I will be using Urethane and doing a bc/cc. I hope to start at least the primer this weekend, I will post some reactions and pics after I start.

I'm thinking of buy the hf turbine also and was wanting to know if

you ever used yours? Any updates?

I just bought the HF ITEM 44677-1VGA sprayer. I finally got it because it is on sale finally for $69 from $99 plus I used my 15% coupon, too. So I got it for $62 with tax. THe blue sprayer also mentioned in this thread is listed for $29 in one of the coupon books if you funds are really limited. Normal price $49. The one I got looks better and has more power and features. I will be trying it in the in 8) late Jan if all goes according to plan to paint my '66 bug.

hpw Wed Dec 12, 2007 3:32 pm

Thanks for the heads up, I will get one this weekend also. Where did you

get the discount coupon?

Let us know how your painting goes. I'll do the same.

Spook, your comment about automotive paint taking 6 months to cure is a carry-over from the old enamel paint days. Today's catalyzed urethane paints are ready to wetsand and polish WITHIN SIX HOURS OF SPRAYING (with the production catalyst). Today's autobody shops use urethane paint exclusively for this purpose. It lets them get many more cars out the door than they ever could with enamel paint.
only after baking, or did yoda leed me wrong
if that is the case then cool,
I can wax right away???????
I'm leary
I realize this post is from way back but for those reading this thread for the first time (like myself)
You should know that both spook and Evil Box are both somewhat correct.

You can sand and polish within hours if cured, but They should NEVER be waxed right away.
Polishing and Waxing are not the same.

Polishing gets a shine from applying progressively finer and finer micro scratches untill the scratches are no longer perceivable to our eyes.
Waxing is a sealer that fills the scratches and rests on top of the clearcoat, trapping the solvents and preventing a full cure.

Wait 3 months minimum before applying a paint sealer or wax.

This is from Dupont performance coatings website, but you will find similar information from other manufacturers
Dupont wrote:
Tips for Success
* Do not use medium to heavy-duty compounds. Use clean cloths and pads to insure that the clear
does not get scratched with dirt particles from old or re-used cloths or pads.
* Do not wax for the first 120 days after painting.

Bought one of the blue ones from HF today. Plan on getting my bus in primer within the next couple months. Planning on putting down a coat of epoxy primer, then the filler work and finish up with high build primer in preparation for paint. At this point I am not planning on doing the actual paint job just the body and prep.I will report back with the results.

Lightnin' Bug Fri Jan 25, 2008 7:43 pm

I recently cruised through the ITC section of HF and found the HVLP sprayer for only $29.97. I bought two since it was a decent price. It made it worth the $9.99 ITC membership fee for the year. The price is still available today.

Hi you guys have got me interested in trying out these paint systems.

I was wondering if anyone could provide some more information on the follwing, concerning spray guns (particularly gravity fed HVLP):

One system I am looking at was the HV2500 (thanks Evil Box). It appears quite reasonable at just over $300. I am asking if any of the other company turbine HVLP guns would fit or match the HV2500? In particular I would like to add one of the gravity fed guns as per the tp tools site listed below:

http://www.tptools.com/dg/350_HVLP-Turbine-Paint-Spray-Guns.html
Their turbine systems dont look too bad either but are starting to get pricey when compared to the HV2500 system (although you do get the extra gun).

I may have cheap frieght through a friend to Australia (not too much available here) and with a transformer (to bring the 240V down to 115V) I'd be in business.

I have eagerly read this sticky along with RodneyW's account at

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=201066&highlight=

I invested in the same type of turbine sprayer RodneyW did (I think), from Sprayfine and will soon use it for the first time with some epoxy primer from Southern Polyurethanes.

I'll start with my Bug fenders. I'm pretty new to this posting business but will try to document what I'm doing with some pictures so I can share them. Thank you everyone, for sharing your experience so freely with complete neophytes like me.
