seabeebuggy Fri Jun 02, 2006 3:02 pm

If you have the cash 4 to 5k get a nice already built one off e pay. it will save you lots of cash later. also if you want to really go off roading don't bother with the swing axles. get the IRS. my .02

bsr8129 Fri Jun 02, 2006 3:37 pm

yea thats what i was looking to spend around 5 or so, ill have to look in to the swing axel or irs, i have no idea what the difference is, but im learning by the hour here with this forum. i dont think ill be doing to much heavy off roading, well atleast not at first, just some dirt trails and stuff.

here is one i found that is local, as in same state, i know its a bit pricey, but wonder what you guys think, worth the price?

Hopefully no one sees this and says what a great deal and buys it before me :)

seabeebuggy Fri Jun 02, 2006 4:01 pm

it would cost you that much to build it . it is nice and if you have the cash , go for it. I think it is about 1500 too much. due to the engine alone. it is a irs trans. the roll cage looks home made.

5k to build a buggy? where show me the place! ha I've spent plenty more than that, not to mention the countless hours of work...

knowing what i do now i would love to have built a buggy for 5k- or 10K. spend more now rather than it nickel and diming you to death for a lot more later!

MURZI Sat Jun 10, 2006 7:54 am

It is cheaper to buy the nice 8-10k buggy and be done with it. Alot cheaper. I know where there is a super nice one for 13k ready to go....

Very close but have not hit the 5k mark yet, it is on the road and that includes all title work.

I have been researching and following up on many sales of the vw meyers manx and other buggies that are similar they all seem to be priced anywhere from 3000 at lowest for a good condition vehicle the most you shld be willing to put out is 6000 imo and that is if you dont need to pay shipping most of these bad boys are on the east coast that i found. Now my issue is that i am buying a 1972 renegade im not exactly sure if that is name of the car or if it is the frame that was built on top of a manx kit now the seller wants 4500 and he said he lowered the price from 6000 the week previously i highly doubt he did because i had not seen his previous postings for the vehicle. i did get to test drive and look the car over today and put my deposit down because he was going to haul the thing out to AZ but now after finding this website i am having a change of perspective i will still pick the buggy up but i wanted to know the opinions of others with more experience then me i talked him down 3700 and he is throwing in a tow bar here is a link of the site you can look at other vehicles at and the buggy i am buying please give me your thoughts and opinions on if i maybe paid to much and the overall condition of the buggy if you want more pics i will have them by tonight and can email i am only 19 and this is my first buggy im still frsh to stick!!!!

I did not say it would be all new parts or even custom looking . new body and a running bug will get you there for less than 4k I have 17k in mine and another 4k going into it next year. for mid travel set up. . I would sell mine for 15k now just to stop me form spending more!!!

We need to see more close up pics to determine if the price is right or not. Right now, if things are all in place and working correctly, and no major problems, I would say the price you are paying is fair.

Building a buggy is a lot of work and time plus the costs involved. I should know as I am basically rebuilding mine for the second time in 35 years.

If that buggy has no problems, looks good to you, and will run great, then I think you have a good deal.

But still want to see more pics, close up and of the inside, outside and underside of buggy. Close examination is the only way to buy one. Plus driving it.

ABHB,

The reason we pay $1,000s more for a fg buggy over a sand rail, is we get to drive it on the streets... or do we....

CA has laws to keep your new buggy off the street. You better be carefull before you plunk down lots of $$$$ for a FG offroad only buggy. You will likley have ot pass a smog test, and maybee alot more, for your new "to you" buggy. Yep even thought it is over 30 years old. Maybee go to the DMV with the seller before you give him cash and find out for yourself. Read Below

i can not believe yous till ahve to pass a smog test god dam this state will ruin me. I am hoping that it will not be smoged i will jsut have to hope AAA has a different setup or something i will see on wednesday and elt you all know how it goes. I just finished towing the beast to my house it seems ok but there are some issues such as a spider crack down the center of the wind shield and also there are no side mirriors but those are easy to get on. I also was wondering if anyone knew if you need a license plate light as well. If anyone can help maybe explain better what i need to do to get this thing smog OK i would definately appreciate it. I will also be posting more pictures tomorrow when i get some light so i can get opinions on the quality of the vehicle as it stands. Again thank you guys for spending the time to give me feedback

90volts Tue Jun 13, 2006 5:05 am

if it had been here on the east coast i was considering that for a second buggy. its a great looking one and i love the style. i would have taken it in a heartbeat.

If you read that entire post, you'll see there's quite a bit of disagreement on the law among the posters, and even among the various DMV offices. My experience was a bit difficult as well, but my DMV did some extensive research in their regulation books and I think that my conclusions are accurate. I also confirmed these statements with the CA DMV online contact links. YMMV.

If your buggy is built on an existing chassis, that has a VIN number on it, and that chassis is mostly complete (shortened is OK), then it will be titled AND registered as the model of car it was originally. For me, that was a 1964 VW beetle. As such, it is exempt from smog checks or for that matter, just about any engine I might choose to put in there. You still need to have all the normal functions of that model year, though, including seat belts, headlights, turn signals, brake lights, windshield wipers, etc.

The only cars that require the "Special Construction" titles are complete chassis fab jobs, and they are then required to meet all current (as of their construction date) smog and safety requirements. So, you'd be very hard pressed in California to make a new, street-legal sand rail. But a buggy on a pre-1974 chassis is home free.

That said, if you get to the DMV and they say something different, askk them to check it in their regulation books. If that fails, do what I do when I don't hear what I want...go back later and talk to someone else, or go to another DMV office and try them. Like most government bureaucracies, if you ask the same question to three people, you'll get at least two different answers, if not more ;-)
