True. Anyone remember "The Flea"? White oval with a cartoon flea on the decklid IIRC. VERY fast street bug! When folks asked him why "The Flea", his answer was "You ever try to catch a flea?"

I disagree. Stenciled cars with rotted body work and the "broken axle" look are much higher on this candidate list, IMO.

I see where you're coming from, but the cars you're talking about aren't supposed to be classy. That's kind of the point to them. A "Hoodride" (yeah, I said it) is sort of like the punk rock of the VW scene, purposefully distasteful.
A car with cartoon characters airbrushed on it is like Ronnie James Dio. He tries to be cool but...he just sucks.

I hear ya, I was just looking for a quick zinger to throw out there. Good news is the cartoon character thing is pretty much a dead fad.

As I recall, the car was built by Keith "Kid" Dean, who wrote a pretty irate letter to the "Bug Mail" section of Hot VWs, as the owner at the time of the feature claimed to have built the car himself.

Really? I never heard of that but if thats true, that car was nothing to be proud of. I seen it in person at Jamboree and it was kinda thrown together. In the mag it had 2 mismatch rear tires. It wasnt clean like a 'Kid Dean' built car thats for sure.

plus all his rubber he painted white by hand, bumper grommets, tailight rubbers etc.

Skim, I may be fully in error as it was a long time ago that I read the letter to the editor. I'll look through my old issues tonight, but I could have sworn that was the car. I never got to see the car in person, so I have no frame of reference.

If my memory is failing me, then I will retract my previous statement  8)

Speaking of cartoon characters, anybody see that god-awful (ok, ok, IMO) cartooned-up split in the newest Hot VWs (Sept. issue)? Yikes...

How current are these pics? I remember that car, it was owned by a guy here in Oregon named Sean Cour, if I remember right. He also had a pretty damn bitchin' black early '60s sunroof with shaved doors, Porsche alloys and pinstriping.

I'd always wondered what happened to some of these cars after the heydey of the '90s.

Well not in the same condition as in the 1988 picture but price was too good to pass up on the 57 even though it needs an engine and other small stuff. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to get both out again.

I used to have that car and the raspberry ghia on my wall when I was in jr high, it was on 4 lug centerlines if I remember right.

bigdish2 Wed Aug 13, 2008 6:55 pm

Skim,

That's it except centerlines were already gone. This was in storage in Del Rio for the past 2yr w/blown motor but the guy looked me up on the internet and called out of the blue. Fortunate 8)

Nice work on the impala.

Wish I had engine that was originally in this car, thebucket's not going to give it up though. Your 55 is coming along hope to see it TX one of these days.

I sold that motor to my buddy. I bet he's sale it. Bro offered me that Oval years ago for 1500. Should have bought it. What did you pay of the oval. Glad to see it back in devine. BTW I saw the Ghia cruising toward CD tire in Natalia. :D

Thebucket sold his oval?

No, thebucket's car is alot nicer than this one. Paid a little more than $1500 not much, though. Paul did the fumio heads you have or had come from Bro. Man, need a complete engine for this one. But the price was too good to pass up even though it sits on irs chassis and rear apron is removeable. Wife doesn't know the difference.

What you doing around Natalia, not much there but CD? Your 55 is looking good from the pics I've seen.

And if cartoon characters painted on a car isn't lame enough, they all have flames coming off of them!
What the fuck is that?

This was a little roadtrip to begin with...friend and I had tickets to see the Huey Lewis concert at the Cal Expo in Sacramento on Friday, August 16th, 1985. After the concert, my friend Rob Artigo (former Two-Hip Trick Team BMX Freestyler - currently now a SF Bay Area KGO radio news reporter) and I decided to go on a roadtrip to SoCal, cruise around the beaches and couple of skateparks he used to ride. While down in SoCal and stopping by couple VW shops along the way, found out about the Johnny's Speed & Chrome show and might as well stop by there and check it out and get some parts for my Ghia in resto progress.

Here are shots from the Johnny's Speed & Chrome show on August 1985:
