Aloha from Hawaii, I'm workin on my 78 Westy but drove down my driveway in my 2001 Jetta and something broke. Turns out it was a cover over the oil pan. Anyone know what that's called? and how to get a replacement? Some kind of skid plate or protective plate I suppose. I just took it off and am takin it easy on the bumps.

I would imagine that it's called the skid plate, but I'm not too sure. You could just go over to the dealer and ask about it at the parts department.

Nothing made of plastic could ever be called a 'skid plate.'

VW refers to the underbelly pan as a 'sound dampener,' as it's primary design is to keep road noise out of the interior cabin. It sounds silly, but you can really tell the difference when it's suddenly gone. 8)

It is actually a metal piece that only fits over the oil pan...looks like it's taken a beating. I've found the same one in a TDI forum with part numbers but I can't find who sells them...sez OEM part...

Cover: 06a 103 660AB = $53.56 (1)
Bushing:06A 103 640J = $0.14 (2)
Screw/bolt:N 014 723 6 = $1.80 (4)
Washer: N 011 560 8 = $0.25 (2)

I tried googling the part number with no luck. Is that a number I call the dealer with and they order it?

Aaahhhh, it's a TDI....why didn't you say so? In that case, 'skid plate' or guard is a proper term. I'm pretty sure that metal guard is a TDI-only part; I don't recall my wife's 1.8t Jetta having one.

Actually, no it's not a TDI (sorry to disappoint :) ) But that's the only place I could find pics and part numbers for it. Turns out i called the local dealer and they have one in stock. The only VW dealer on this island is 2 hours away so I'm goin on Saturday.

Thanx for the help tho, Josh
