I can be driving along and my coolant temp will be steady, about middle of the gage, and it will all of a sudden start climbing, almost all the wa y the big scary red zone at the top, and then, not half a block later, it will return to normal? What's up? Has anyone seen this behavior before? Should I just blow the car up and save myself the misery?

More than likely it's a coolant temp sensor going bad.........but it's hard to speculate anything without knowing what car you're dealing with.

I had the same problem with my 84 gti and it turned out that a pocket of air got into the system and would cause a hot spot wherever it happend to be and when it was by the water temp sensor it would register hot. I fixed it by idleing the car and putting more water/antifreeze in whenever the level went down in the tank with the filler cap.
