| I overfilled my old Jetta by about a litre in a hurry one night an will never make that mistake again. I got about a half a mile (in the city) when it started accelerating by itself (apparently burning the excess oil). Shut the key off and it kept running. My brother thought it was possessed. It would redline as soon as i pushed the clutch so I had to try to stall it out but even that didn't work very well. Finally came into heavy traffic and had to push the clutch to stop and it redlined, made some rattly sounds and seized. Coasted into a parking lot and called for a friend to come tow me home but while I was waiting I spoke to another guy who had the same thing happen to him and said when it cooled down it started right up again so after a half an hour or so I gave it a try and it started right up! I was amazed. I crawled under it and drained some oil out (and CHECKED the level this time) and drove it several thousand kilometres after that. You couldn't see anything behind it for the first few miles because of the blue smoke but it never gave me any problems until it finally wore out (or so I thought) at 470,000 kms. |

Similiar experience happened to me, I changed the oil from 40w to 50w
did not over fill. But motor was on its last leg any way. Same senario
reving occurred in traffic. The only way I could bring the rpm's down was to up shift her into a higher gear. White/blue smoke would come out.
I rebuilt the motor found out the head was cracked rings were shot.
Now I got a whole new motor rebuilt.Funny how it worked out like it did.
Mike,I have a 82' Diesel Rabbit. |
