Whatever happened to that young man with the homemade engine for shop class? Did it ever run? I lost track of the thread and now I can't find it. :?

The thread was in the rants. I dont recall seeing a follow up with info if it ran or not.

it was vwdmc16, and since the rants threads are deleted after 7 days of inactivity, the axe fell. Last I heard he couldnt get his rings to seal properly because he'd used a hacksaw blade to cut the ring groove. the thread probably wouldve done better in here anyway. shoot him a PM

hey guys, I thought you all forgot about my project. well lately i've been finishing my peltier A/C set up for the ghia which needs some tuning before it will be finished, also i'm working 36hrs a week so i'm a little short on time but i still plan on finishing the motor.

all that is needed besides the rings is alittle adjusting on the crank bushings as they were binding. i'll throw up a post in the rants when I make progress.
I need to buy a small drill press to continue the work in my garage, but it will run

maybe you should post it here instead... that way we can do a watched topic that won't disappear.

yeah, i have no lathe or anu thing complex, what would you recommend to cut a 1/8'' groove in a 1" steel tube that is 3/32" deep and even?

Pistons are normally made with aluminum or bronze.

Steel is not really a good material for pistons.

I would have suggested you familiarized yourself with "cutting techniques" used in machining. It has not really changed much.

You can set it up like a center rest in a lathe. You have 3 legs that will hold the part and center the workpiece. Have the 2 legs hold the "piston" and the third leg will be the cutter. Grind the width to desired dimension and have like a screw advance the tool slowly and turn the piston over. Advance a little a a time.

Sort of like making the rifling in the bore of a barrel. The toolbit is propped up a 5/10,000 inch at a time. But instaed of going long...you have the movement going in circles.

this can be made out of wood.

Yes, I know it's years old, but it's an interesting-sounding story...

Anybody know of an update to this? :)
