I have been doing a bunch of research on the various gauges that were available. I have also been avidly collecting select gauges. this is a huge topic. I have a few pieces of period gauge sales literature and magazine ads. I will scan and post that stuff eventually. I should mention that VDO made a shitload of gauges for VWs. there are literally hundreds of different styles and variations of VDO gauges for air cooled VWS.
here are some of my favorite gauges:
VDO karmann ghia tachometer
Koch oil temp
Motest inside/outside ambient temperature gauge
Gewe klinometer (accelleration gauge)
Halda speedpilot (rally time/speed equipment) |

Lind-
When you get time, please post the scans of Gauge information, also pictures of those gauges you listed as some of your favorites would be great.
I was going back through the many pages of the accessories forum and noticed that there are between 4 -10 threads about gauges per page, so i thought i would try and bring as much information as possible together. |

Ok,
It seems that there is an earlier run of EMPI gauges than the 1st generation black globes. the gauges i am refering to have a light colored inner ring and a black outer ring on the face of the gauge, as seen in the 1958 and 1963 EMPI catalogs. There are also several different early tachs. does anyone actually own any of these "early" gauges? I would like to post up some pictures in the EMPI area of this Thread if possible.
*ADDED TOO FIRST POST* |

The head temp gauge and ammeter gauge are different generations other than the black globes
I think the vacuum gauge is black globe era |

cylinder head gauge in fahrenheit was sold for corvairs from 1962 onwards and came with a mounting panel. $29.95 product number 271.
EMPI described it as having "97% accuracy" |

The cylinder head temp by auto-haus was the only gauge they sold under their own name. All the other gauges they sold were made by VDO, SW etc. |

1964 corvair catalog (from DaveM site)
1963 VW empi catalog
(from DaveM site)
because the Head temp in one is Celsius and the other Fahrenheit does not mean its specifically for that vehicle
the gauge itself exactly the same just different reading
but it does make sense that since Corvairs were american made cars, they would use Fahrenheit and VW being german they would use Celsius
like KPH compared to MPH
the Ammeter is Corvair ammeter
the head temp gauges and the ammeter gauge i posted above are made in the US
black globes, white globes are made in sweden same as the speedwell
in fact if you look at 66 and earlier empi catalogs they sell Speedwell gauges
in the 67 catalog they show the same style gauge as the speedwells but with the EMPI logo
and the red niddles empi gauges are japan |
