Im a little puzzled at the video
why a 1980's ford ambulance/van passing all the 356 at 8min in the video?
aside from that, interesting footage of those survivors.

Well, now that Raul is in power, things are starting to change (from what I hear). Anybody got any new info about how things are going down there?

I went to Cuba for 6 months. I'm from NZ and my old employer used to import coffee from there. Yes there are early VW's there. Just to clear a few things up, you can get things in and out but they would probably want a trade. That might be a more amicable arrangement. I took a suitcase full of machine parts for the coffee machines as a gift from my old boss, they loved it. Which meant when I stayed I didn't pay gringo prices like you would.

Just to clear some of the other things up. Cubans aren't stupid or waiting to be "rescued" as some of you think or get wound up in politics. I did get to see behind the scenes when I was there, even gave blood. The VW's and other utility vehicles were pretty heavily used. The exotic cars that I got shown were still pretty rough, they have had enough tourists through to ask silly money for them. I'm sure the 'patina' tax will be just as high for a shagged Barndoor.

Thank you for posting your insight. just need additional clarification.

So how many Barndoor buses did you see? What do you consider early vw's?

Pics?

It's easy to get into Cuba as a US citizen, fly to Cancun, Mexico City, or tons of other places and into Cuba from those cities. People I know that have gone there say you tell Cuban immigration officials that you're an American and they won't stamp your passport. They want the gringo $$ too much to risk you getting into trouble.

When I was there mid 90's there were a couple of barndoors being used in and around the farms. I joked with the guys that the early VW's are a pain in the arse as you only have the side doors. They showed me a later 50's van that had been chopped into a singlecabish from what I could see as the fuel tank was no longer the little side one. These were in the southeast of Cuba near Granma. No pictures of the VW's sorry.

You can stay with a family in a sort of bed and breakfast setup. I would suggest that you take a few photos of a Barndoor over there and put the word in the street. When I caught across to Santiago the train it stopped halfway as they broke down. So everyone piled out and we all hitchhiked, as by law you have to pick up hitchhikers.
But hey it was much better than staying in the Hotel de Nacional pretending to be Hemmingway having your photo taken next to a '52 Chevy.

I would think any car/vw in cuba would not be worth the boat ride to get it home, that said it is on my bucket list to fly my own plane to cuba before i die.. i have been 12mi off the coast flying Key west to Cancun, talked to the cuban air traffic controlers, very pro and friendly even invited us into Havana. Heres the problem if a us private plane/pilot has any problem in cuba you are shit out of luck no ins coverage and no help from D.C. so i will not take the chance of loosing my aircraft. we can only hope it gets better

Thing is I don't know if I should be applauding this. I know there are those thinking another bus saved!! But the van was part of the culture there. Most of those who have been to Cuba and even those who haven't can see by the photos that this Bus would have been kept on the roads no matter what. It would have probably been running a Lada engine or bits of chicken wire in it.
But it would be used as a Van.
Now it has been shipped over to Europe and will probably end up in the UK. I am sure there is someone gonna put aged Havana Club Rum logos on it, lower it and put a crate of *insert beverage here* on a roofrack or what ever the fashion is now. Like some Hipster caracature of what they thought vintage was.
But it's a bit like when you go to the British Museum and you see all these aritfacts from all over the world, some of you will love seeing all these things in one place. Yet the people whos articfacts are there see it differently.
