You are doing a great job and excellent work. I can't wait for more updates. :D

I am doing something similar right now to my '56 except my pan was from a '67. The pan was already in "good" shape so I decided to keep it since this is going to be my daily driver and not a total restoration and I get the ball joint front end, wider axles and larger brakes which I like a little better.

This car has been sitting for years and still has the original drums, bearings, and even seals in the drums! I was amazed. I bought new bearings but I think the original VW ones are actually better, so I kept them.

Here's the pan so far with the new beam (all stock). All the brakes are new too. I might need to do something with that steering box!

nice!

yea, I'm still around. progress has been beyond slow, as every time I find myself with some spare $$$ life seems to have other plans for it before I can get to the parts store, especially since my local parts guy screwed people over and closed shop.

ANYWAY, I hope to get back to work soon on this. thanks for looking

any progress? i just read this thread for the first time looking around trying to learn a little about 57s as i may be trading a turbo toyota pickup for one. but i also have a 66 to restore with HORRIBLE east coase rot. so this is a big inspiration for that one as it has been sitting for a bit. thanks for keeping it going. great work, great pics, lots of detail...

r20crazy Fri Mar 20, 2009 10:05 pm

been AGES since I have been on here. This project was put on hold yet again due to financial constraints, but I am currently looking for parts needed to finish up the chassis and get things back on track.

Took me a bit to even find this thread as the site format has changed since my last visit  and am having to relearn how to find things.

If anyone happens to have a 1600dp case FS in socal (used but rebuildable prefered) lmk.

was gonna add some more pics to this thread to get everyone 'caughtup', but realized I haven't uploaded them yet. As some of you will recall I lost a hard drive and alot of the 'in progress' pics to this point were lost, but I have retaken pics of 'finished' items up till now and will post them, minus the detail pics obviously.

I have also decided that for now, the front disk conversion is off, and the stock drums will be repaired/replaced to help get the chassis finished ASAP. I hope to be driving this thing again by dec, even if its with no windows and doors/hood held shut with bungies for a test go.

hope to update with pics in a day or 2. thanks again for looking everyone

Hurry the hell up.

Just kidding. Mine's been in 'kit form' since 1994. I've learned the hard way that you don't disassemble a car until you have your budget and parts in hand. Live has a way of misdirecting you.

But I bet I get mine back together before you! Slow poke.

 I know, i know. the fail of this thread recently is epic. I can't even find the replacement pics I took to fill-in the gaps to its current state after the hard-drive crash.

r20crazy Fri Sep 11, 2009 10:23 am

I'm still here. so I went into the garage yesterday and actually took the time to stop and look at where I had left off on my progress a LONG while ago. I see that the new stearing box has left a puddle under it (wiped it off so I can find exactly where the leak is), and the trans has a leak somewhere near one of the boots (which I don't understand as the trans has no fluid in it).

but I'm feeling inspired again to get back to work. Front disk conversion is on hold, and I am picking up parts to redo the drums in front this weekend. then the chassis will be complete minus engine. then I have to source a front clip in my price range, or setup something temporary because I'm itching to get this thing in some state of togetherness.

I'm sure I'll have some questions as I get back into this project and have to refresh my brain, so thanks in advance for any/all help.

So are you still in this thing for the long haul or what?

NEVER GIVE UP

r20crazy Mon May 17, 2010 11:22 am

ok everyone, motivation has returned!!!! i pickedup a rebuilt 1600 shortblock from an awesome samba member this past week, and spent 10 hours this weekend sandblasting the chrome/rust off engine tin and header/j-tubes. still will be a while b4 its running as I have just about tappedout the funds for this month, but if I can keep up the current motivation level I should have a 100% completed chassis in a few months

I'll look back where I left off with the pics and see what I need to update chassis/pic wise to get this up to date.

r20crazy Tue May 18, 2010 3:40 pm

so it looks like to get up to date this thread only needs pics of the rearend back in the car. I obviously wont have any progress pics as its already together, but I'll get the chassis out tomorrow and take the pics to get thread up to date and continue from there.

r20crazy Wed May 19, 2010 10:59 pm

so I ordered about $300 in parts today.... WAY WAY over my budget, but motivation is taking over sanity. I hope to have most of the engine assembled this weekend. took some current chassis pics and motor progress, will be up in a few days. just got home from blasting more parts and pluging new oil pump for full flow setup

bill may Thu May 20, 2010 1:50 pm

have you tried sliding your seats onto aftermarket floor pans yet?

r20crazy Sun May 23, 2010 8:14 pm

so somehow I'll be at 2010 summer jam july 31st in san pedro. I HOPE car doesnt arrive on trailer, but i'll be there some way pending disaster and trailer ride as I am registered. uploading pics to show progress. may not be posted till tomorrow as I'm kinda pissed that a new cylinder set I bought is damaged and thats why I'm posting this update as its pointless to continue 2nite. hope to have motor running in 2 weeks or less.

r20crazy Sun May 23, 2010 8:54 pm

ok.... so here is a quick pic update as to where the car stands after last update. I'm not gonna fill in the particulars with these, as it was long ago, and progress pics were lost in the HD crash.... pardon the dust. I'm more interested in working at this point than dusting the chassis....

***new pics, but work done over a year ago***

r20crazy Sun May 23, 2010 9:05 pm

more tomorrow..... and thanks for the MASSIVE viewing of this thread.

***if an mod can fix the title please PM me, was so long ago it wont let me change it any more....thank***

Looks great. Look out for the blue moving blankets

They burn like they are soaked in gas. Had one flame up from grinding sparks a good 6 feet away from the working area.

r20crazy Sat May 29, 2010 10:24 pm

bought another $100 in parts yesterday for the motor.... if I decided to tivo the indy 500 I'll be in the garage. I'll post some motor build pics in a few days... got a full day or two to get things finished motor wise (and a parts delivery delayed due to holiday wknd) and it should run.....SHOULD
